Sometimes, food is love

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

January 27, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

I am an absolute sucker for a memoir read by the author, and particularly fond of celebrity memoirs. I’ve been aware of the buzz around this book for a while, but wasn’t familiar with Japanese Breakfast (the author’s band), and didn’t really have intentions of picking it up for myself. …And then I found myself scrolling through Libby looking for an “available now” audiobook and decided to give it a try. Crying in H Mart is, at its heart, a book about the author’s relationship […]

How Cannonball Read has given me permission to not finish a book

Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende

January 26, 2022 by Dome'Loki 6 Comments

I love how supportive the Cannonball community is with the constant reassurance one doesn’t have to review everything read and that it’s okay to not finish a book.  Historically, I have been a finisher of books.  Then I started reading Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James for Cannonball Bingo 2020. Thirty-six pages in I quit because I could not handle the near constant parade of sex, bodily fluids, violence, and disparaging remarks about boys who are actually girls and vice versa.  That was an […]

Yearbook by Seth Rogen

January 25, 2022 by Sophia 1 Comment

I was looking for another good audiobook and saw Yearbook by Seth Rogen on NPR’s Best Books List of 2021. I’ve found that comedians write very entertaining memoirs, and they are often even better audiobooks–especially when they read it themselves. Seth Rogan’s book was no different. Yearbook is a relatively short compilation of moments in Rogen’s life. He talks about wanting a girlfriend in eighth grade, his training for and the multiple bar mitzvahs he attended when he was thirteen, being a child stand-up comedian, moving to Los […]

Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel H. Pink

January 24, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

About two years ago, I started taking on supervisory duties at work. As a life-long introvert, I knew that my people skills could use some improvement. So as I started looking for continuing ed opportunities at work, I also started making an effort to include some business and leadership books into my rotation. Drive is interesting as it gets to the question of motivation in the workplace. Pink starts with some broad history of motivation, from the very beginning: the biological impulse to survive led […]

Perhaps the best book I’ve ever read on Feminism

Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall

January 24, 2022 by postcardsandbooks 4 Comments

I feel very confident in saying this book is going to be the best book I read in January. It was absolutely wonderful and I have devoured it. I started listening to it one evening, and when I next looked at the clock 6 hours had passed, it was 3 in the morning and the book was over. This is high praise, especially for non-fiction titles. Mikki Kendall takes the time in this book to break down in clear essays some of deeper issues of […]

Rainbow Rowell does COVID (with a dash of love)

If the Fates Allow by Rainbow Rowell

January 23, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Somehow, despite Rainbow Rowell being my favorite author, I was unaware of this story’s existence. But, in scouring through all the Rainbow Rowell reviews on here, just out of curiosity, I noticed plenty of reviews for this, discovered it was about Reagan from Fangirl, and decided I had to join in on the fun. If the Fates Allow picks up with Reagan during COVID times. Turns out she’s like my fiancee if  she were far rougher around the edges. Seeing Reagan go to such great […]
