History and drama on Mount Everest

The Third Pole by Mark Synnott

February 23, 2022 by Sophia 2 Comments

I first noticed The Third Pole (2021) by Mark Synnott on NPR’s Best Books List. I love climbing and mountaineering, and I’ve already read a couple of books on Mount Everest. But what really made me read this book (or listen to it on audiobook) was that I recognized Mark Synnott from some North Face expedition presentations that I’d seen on Youtube. Synnott had been onstage with Jimmy Chin and Hazel Findley, some amazing athletes and adventurers. What made me remember him, though, was that he was a very […]

A nightmare before a 1950s Irish Christmas

Snow by John Banville

February 20, 2022 by tiny_bookbot Leave a Comment

Content note: this review will discuss child sexual abuse, which is central to the plot of the novel as well as to the history of the Catholic Church in Ireland (which is also at the center of the novel). A lady has not been able to catch a damned break so far in 2022, so this is the first moment I’ve had to sit down and write a review, of the most recent book that I’ve finished, and goddamn was it a bleak and tough […]

So maybe we shouldn’t go exploring abandoned Swedish mining towns!

The Lost Village by Camilla Sten

February 19, 2022 by Mobius_Walker 1 Comment

[Not discussed in this review but in the book itself. TW: abuse of a differently abled person, implied rape] A group of documentarians go to an abandoned village in Sweden. The lead on the project, Alice Lindstedt, wants to uncover the dark history of this little town, as her grandmother’s family was a part of the citizens that disappeared one day without a trace. But when they arrive odd things start occurring. At first it’s just mysterious figures standing in the distance and missing items. […]

I have only just now noticed the snake on the cover of this book. Which is extremely foreboding if you’ve read the book!

Somebody's Daughter by Ashley C. Ford

February 14, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

This one is going to be tough for me to review because I did like the book, and it was very well-written, and the audio narration was well-performed (by the author herself!), but I didn’t feel that sense of resolution I normally feel after finishing a good book. On a conscious level, I wanted things from this book that it didn’t seem interested in providing, so there was always going to be a clash there (more on this below), but also, there’s just something I […]

“We’re all eccentrics in a town like this”

Larrimah: A missing man, an eyeless croc and an outback town of 11 people who mostly hate each other by Caroline Graham; Kylie Stevenson

February 13, 2022 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Larrimah: A missing man, an eyeless croc and an outback town of 11 people who mostly hate each other You have to hand it to Caroline Graham and Kylie Stevenson, that is one hell of a book title and one that would be perfectly suited to a piece of absurdist Australian fiction. But while  absolutely absurd, the story told in Larrimah isn’t fictional at all, but rather true crime.   This book is a follow up to the podcast ‘Lost in Larrimah’, which won […]

Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea by Charles Seife

February 13, 2022 by Halbs 7 Comments

Years ago, I mentioned in the CBR comments that I was interested in learning more about the beauty of math, but that I was awful at math.  Some benevolent commentator told me that Charles Seife’s Zero was a great book about the beauty of math for a lay person. I can’t remember the person who told me that, but I’m appreciative of the recommendation. After years of sitting on my digital shelf, late last year this piece of niche non-fic finally got its time in […]
