Frustrating, intriguing, and even sometimes satisfying

Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators by Ronan Farrow

March 29, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

If anyone’s a long time Kfishgirl fan (like read my CBR posts in the past few years), you’ll know that my favorite thing / something that brings me silly joy is when the title of the book is mentioned in the actual book itself.  I also like when people run out of bullets in movies and throw their gun at their enemies, but that’s a different topic.  Catch and Kill is basically what media organizations were doing or are currently doing when there’s a big […]

“But there are many fools in the world. One praises God for their existence and keeps out of their way.”

The Man in the Brown Suit (Colonel Race, #1) by Agatha Christie

March 29, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was a fun outlier in Christie’s body of work, though it is actually one of her earliest published books. She doesn’t normally do thrillers or espionage (and when she does it’s often not all that great), or feature one-off main characters, or feature a narrative that has travel and adventure in it, but this book has all of that. It’s also unfortunately one of the more dated of Christie’s works because it takes place outside that domestic sphere her other work is so comfortable […]

So many characters die in this book!

For Your Own Good by Samantha Downing

March 29, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is one of those books that I randomly saw on the list of available mystery / suspense / thriller audiobooks list at my library.  I usually just search for audiobooks that are in English, “Available now”, and fall into the horror, mystery, suspense, or thriller categories.  Those are my preferred genres of books.  I’ll also throw in some science fiction, but that’s neither here nor there.  Sometimes I feel like I get on a streak of crappy or boring books with this random approach […]

Silverview by John le Carré

March 28, 2022 by tiny_bookbot Leave a Comment

I got hooked on John le Carré sometime after I finished undergrad. I’m not quite sure what started it (I think watching the Alec Guinness miniseries adaptation of Tinker Tailor with my parents, or maybe it was watching and then reading The Constant Gardener after its award season run), but I got deeply into classic spy fiction for a hot minute (and have stayed kind of into it): I started with The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, moved on to classic Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and also […]

This is the second book I read this year, and it was nearly as painful as the first!

The Stranger in the Mirror by Liv Constantine

March 28, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So I finished this book back in January, but I just re-read a summary of the book to refresh my memory.  Ugh.  My brain is reminding me how much I disliked this book too!  The basic story is about a woman (Addison) who’s engaged to a great sounding man.  He’s a nice, smart, intelligent guy with a good job, a pretty good family, a nice house, and he’s financially comfortable.  Addison on the other hand has a menial job, she’s pretty nice, has almost zero […]

I started this book on a plane, and it got me through takeoff and landing. Those are the pros…

Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King and Owen King

March 28, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So here is a blurb from the first review I saw for this book: “In this spectacular father/son collaboration, Stephen King and Owen King tell the highest of high-stakes stories: what might happen if women disappeared from the world of men?” I was excited when I read the summary of the book.  It’s a super weird, but interesting idea.  Basically the whole world gets infected by a virus, but only the women are affected.  They go to sleep and end up in a cocoon, but […]
