“The impossible we do immediately. The unimaginable takes a little while.”

Cold Days (Dresden Files #14) by Jim Butcher

April 2, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Busy I finished reading this over a month ago and am now clawing my way through a backlog of tardy reviews on this snowy Midwestern APRIL day. Snowy. APRIL. DAY. In what we are calling Spring I guess? Ruuuuude. But I digress. When I dig into the recesses of my mind about this book, not much is surfacing, which isn’t a great sign. This book was reminiscent of an SNL Stefon skit. Bear with me here. For the unfamiliar, Stefon is an […]

Characters wishing there were signs at a fork in the road: “There’s cake this way!” vs. “So many teeth! Nope nope nope!”

Kill the Farm Boy by Delilah S. Dawson and Kevin Hearne

April 1, 2022 by Bothari43 1 Comment

Does every slightly funny fantasy book get compared to Terry Pratchett? A of all, that’s lazy, and second of B, it is so rarely accurate. This was slight and fun, but it reminded me more of a Christopher Moore type than a Pratchett type. But when I downloaded it from my library app, there were lots of raving quotes about its Pratchettness. This set the bar too high for a book that was just fine. This starts out like every fantasy book you’ve ever read, […]

Fuzz by Mary Roach

March 31, 2022 by andtheIToldYouSos 1 Comment

Honestly, Mary Roach could write a book about the paperwork filing systems for an auto dealership (my truest nightmare) and I would still roll up my sleeves and give it a go. Luckily, the topic  of animal criminals is NOT my nightmare, so I was eagerly anticipating another romp with my gal, Mary! As usual, I listened to this one, and if you are interested in picking it up I recommend doing the same as well! I almost always prefer a read-by-the-author piece of non-fic […]

I read this book twice

To Be Taught, if Fortunate by Becky Chambers

March 30, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I downloaded this audiobook from my library.  I remember thinking “Ooh, I wanted to read this book.”  I think I made it through the first sentence before I said to myself “Ooh, I already read this book.”  I really didn’t remember most of it though.  Thankfully it was just as good the second time around!  It’s also a short book, so it was nice to read after Dune, which took me almost two weeks to finish.  I think this audiobook was around 4 or 5 […]

We have become a place of long weeping

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

March 29, 2022 by Emmalita 6 Comments

Black Sun is one of those books that for some reason I don’t read because I know I will really like it. And then I finally read it and I’m mad at myself both for not reading it sooner and also for having read it at all because now I’ll never read it again for the first time. My brain is a weird place. I have an arc of Fevered Star, which has driven me to finally breaking the glass on Black Sun. I listened […]

Another book with an interesting concept that meandered aimlessly and ran full steam ahead into despair

Anthem by Noah Hawley

March 29, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

The summary of this book may sound morbid, and it may be odd that it drew me in, but here we are.  I like a mystery. Here is what my library’s audiobook / ebook app had as a synopsis: Suddenly and without precedent or explanation, something awful has been happening to teenagers across the globe, forcing parents to face a lonely future without their children.  At the site of each loss, there lies a cryptic message, A11, which may be the clue to solving the […]
