Another mediocre You’ve Got Mail retelling.

Read Between the Lines (Ms. Right, #1) by Rachel Lacey

August 23, 2022 by narfna 4 Comments

I liked this, but not nearly as much as I wanted to. I don’t think I knew this was a You’ve Got Mail retelling when I put this on my TBR, but maybe I did and I’ve just forgotten. Either way, it took me by surprise when the references started piling up: There’s a dog named Brinkley, a woman who owns a bookshop she inherited from her mother and who has a picture of her mother on the counter of the two of them dancing; the […]

The one where Holden gets to be a do-gooder on another planet.

Cibola Burn (The Expanse, #4) by James S.A. Corey

Whoops, need to get this review out before I start my re-read of book five. This wasn’t my least favorite of these books the first time through, that for some reason was book two (even though I can objectively say that one is a better book, I just prefer this more inferior one for some reason). This is also most people’s least favorite of the series, and I can see why, I really can. This is actually the only one of these I read in […]

“The world changed faster than I could”

Don't Cry For Me by Daniel Black

BINGO – Minds (the narrator reflects at the end of his life in the various ways that he has changed his mind on certain truths he once believed) Jacob is dying. He knows that his time is almost up, but he has some things to resolve, namely with his son Isaac. In a series of letters to his son Isaac, Jacob tries to go back to the very beginning of his life and explain where he comes from, where their family has roots, how his […]

I unexpectedly fell in love with this one day.

Drunk on All Your Strange New Words by Eddie Robson

Thanks to NetGalley and Recorded Books for the audio ARC. It hasn’t affected the content of my review. Firstly, I’m going to apologize in advance because this review might end up being the equivalent of one of those annoying YouTube comments where some genius pops in to be like “FIRST!” and sometimes they’re not even first but they’re so proud of themselves anyway. I hope I don’t descend to that level but I can’t promise anything because I had such a good time with this […]

Still a perfect fantasy novella.

The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson

August 18, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I almost don’t have anything to say about this, because it just is. I’m taking away my former 4.5 star rating, and this is now just a straight five. It is a perfect fantasy novella. This takes place in Sanderson’s Cosmere (a shared universe for all his adult fantasy), but can be read completely on its own, and would also be a good introduction to both Sanderson’s work, and to high fantasy in general. Our main character is Shai, a Forger, who has just been captured […]

The Story the Torn Gown Told

The Sewing Girl's Tale: A Story of Crime and Consequences in Revolutionary America by John Wood Sweet

August 16, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

CBR 14 Bingo: Question Lanah Sawyer was questioned again and again in an effort to get at a truth she had already told. One evening, a teenage girl and a man who called himself a lawyer went for a walk on the Battery. But Lanah Sawyer refused to stay silent about what he had done to her – and charged Harry Bedlow with rape. I have heard of Lanah Sawyer before, briefly, though I cannot recall whether it was in history class or in Gail […]
