The Noble Hustle: Poker, Beef Jerky, and Death by Colson Whitehead

February 9, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I have a feeling this was a poor choice for first Colson Whitehead book. He’s clearly a very talented writer and yet, this reads like a magazine article that bloated beyond capacity. I would really be curious to read the article in Grantland that inspired this book because I bet it was fucking awesome. As a book? It’s uneven and all over the place. Much of the humor felt forced. It’s hard knowing how to rate a book like this, so I finally settled on […]

When he casually fails to mention his other fiancée

Duped: Double Lives, False Identities, and the Con Man I Almost Married by Abby Ellin

February 9, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

In college, I lived in one of those big houses that had a million roommates. There were always people moving in and out and while I was close with many of my roommates, others stayed for just a short while and we never got to know them very well. One of these was a woman who was a compulsive liar. She told small lies and big lies, so many lies that it hardly seemed she even noticed she was telling lies. It was like she […]

Fun story, bad editing

The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty

February 9, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. This book was a pretty slow to pick up pace, but by the end I was digging both the story and characters. Nahri, a con woman in 18th century Cairo, is used to scraping by and lying for survival. She tricks rich people into giving her money in exchange for palm readings and healings. It’s never meant to be taken seriously until she accidentally summons a djinn warrior. When questioned by the djinn, it comes out that she has some actual skill with […]

This would make a good book club read

Sadie by Courtney Summers

February 9, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

3.5 stars. A very interesting read, both from a story standpoint and a writing standpoint. It didn’t totally work for me on every level, but I’m not sorry I read it and I would recommend it. DO NOT do the audiobook if you’re a frequent podcast listener. The actors they got for the audio version are trying their hardest, they really are. However, the production and delivery weren’t at all like real podcasts so it was hard to stay inside the world of the book. […]

Maybe the movie is better?

The Monuments Men by Robert M. Edsel

February 9, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 5 Comments

2.5 stars. I really, really wanted to like this book. Such an interesting story about world war 2 that doesn’t get told in schools. Hitler and other top brass during the war were obsessed with getting their hands on and hoarding artistic masterpieces. (Except, not modern art which they thought was degenerate and they sought to destroy.) Many treasures were stolen away and hidden, creating utter chaos in the art world. Cue the Monuments Men, a special force tasked with locating and saving these pieces […]

Enjoyable af

Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum

February 9, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

3.5 stars. This is feel-good young adult lit without being too fluffy about it. It’s YA rom-com with some serious stuff thrown in. Jessie’s mom died a couple years ago and finds herself relocated to California from Chicago, living with a new step-mom and step-brother. She’s going to a fancy private school with a bunch of kids who either ignore her or hassle her and she misses her life from before. When a mysterious person starts emailing her anonymously offering to help her navigate the […]
