Still gobbling up books, but not so great at writing reviews. Mostly doing design projects for Cannonball and leaving bare bones reviews on Goodreads. https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/17113957-jen (Learn more about this Cannonballer: yesknopemaybe's Quick Questions interview.)

Remind me never to go back in time

Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy by Karen Abbott

February 24, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

This was a pretty well written, interesting look into a part of Civil War history that we don’t always get. Abbott warns at the beginning that some of the stories were told by the characters themselves and may have been exaggerated for the public and I definitely think that’s true at several points in the narrative. That caveat aside, it was really fascinating reading about these women’s lives. It was uncomfortable reading about the confederate characters, O’Neale and Boyd, but I think it’s important to […]

Every Pride and Prejudice retelling is an excuse to post Firth gifs

Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal

February 24, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

Two Pride and Prejudice retellings in a row that I’ve enjoyed! It’s a February miracle. I actually liked this one a bit better than Pride, but they’re both good and worth reading. The draw of Unmarriageable isn’t in the way the plot points are reinterpreted because all in all, it sticks pretty closely to the original story. The draw is in the early 2000’s Pakistani setting which is similar enough to the original English setting for the plot points to make sense and different enough […]

You are getting very, very sleepy

The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker

February 23, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

This book was a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, I could hardly put it down and the lyricism was mesmerizing. On the other hand, it kind of went nowhere with the plot and left me wanting more and not in a good way. I kept waiting and waiting for something new to happen and it never really did. And yet, parts of it were super compelling. I guess I’d recommend this to readers who love prose and setting and are ok with […]

Murderbot brings me so much joy

Artificial Condition by Martha Wells

Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells

February 11, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 6 Comments

The last half of 2018 was such a hellhole for me personally that I kind of just stopped posting reviews and one that I missed out on getting to review was the excellent first book in the Murderbot series. I’m not surprised at how popular the series is here as they seems like the perfect Cannonball Read kind of books. Plus, they’re novellas so it’s really easy to tear through them quickly. —> Spoilers below for previous books! <— Artificial Condition (Murderbot #2) – 5 […]

Lyndsay Faye’s best… so far

The Paragon Hotel by Lyndsay Faye

February 10, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

I am so happy to report that this novel was truly a great read, sure to be on my favorites list at the end of the year. I was a little thrown by not loving my last Lyndsay Faye book, but faintingviolet rightly pointed out that it was her first published book, so it’s natural for it to not be as good. It does appear that Faye is only getting better and better. I loved Jane Steele and I LOVED The Paragon Hotel. The story […]

Evil AIs are in my wheelhouse

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

February 10, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

I picked this up purely based on the renewed buzz it was getting in one of my book circles. It was available as a library audio download, so why not? I went into it knowing basically nothing about it except what the cover looked like. I was honestly expecting a mystery book since it seemed like a case file. And I guess it really is a case file, just not the kind I was anticipating. In reality, it’s part evil AI sci fi and part […]
