Foist This Upon Your Teenagers

September 12, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I think this book is on verge of getting over-hyped by the book community, so even though I really enjoyed it, I don’t want people to go into it thinking it’s going to be the best young adult novel they’re ever going to read. There’s a lot to recommend Everything, Everything though. Nicola Yoon’s first novel brims with easygoing, pleasant prose and well-written characters. For a short book, she really brought the characters to life. That’s probably partly because she has such a talent for […]

A Must-Read for Anyone With Connections to Eating Disorders

September 12, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I have close friends who have struggled with eating disorders and even though there is a lot of good information available on the internet, I was feeling like I needed something comprehensive and basic to educate me. It’s really hard to be ignorant and supportive at the same time. This book is the perfect beginner’s guide to the complex world of eating disorder recovery. The book is divided into small, readable sections answering basic questions about eating disorders. Here’s a sampling of some of those […]

A Book About a Jokey Robot

September 8, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 13 Comments

Well, I might as well get this over with. It’s intimidating panning a book everyone and their mother seems to love. Please don’t come at me with pitchforks. I will say this in The Martian’s defense, it has a stunning cover design and a really, really good premise. A clever botanist/engineer accidentally gets deserted on Mars and has to Macgyver his way to survival until someone can come back for him? Genius. If it sounds interesting to you at all, you should give it a […]

Read This

September 4, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

It’s funny that I just happened to read Speak and Cloud Atlas within a few weeks of each other. (Omg, I’m so far behind on reviews!) I went into both not knowing much about them, but they’re so similar in structure and tone that it feels like serendipity. Like Cloud Atlas, Speak doesn’t have much of an overarching plot and has multiple narrators spanning centuries. Although Speak is less gimmicky in its structure, both books connect the characters through personal records and intertwining themes. I […]

The Only Thing Constant In Life Is Change

September 3, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

“What wouldn’t I give now for a never-changing map of the ever-constant ineffable? To possess, as it were, an atlas of clouds.” I literally tried and failed 3 times to get into this book over several years, but I didn’t succeed until the 4th try. I have to say that it was definitely worth the effort! The problem was that in a book with 6 narrators, it begins with the least interesting and least accessible storyline. If you can just make it through the difficult […]

A Good Book At The Wrong Time

August 14, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I wanted to connect with this book so much (I loved the movie adaptation a few years ago), but just couldn’t get there. It’s was an easy book to admire and a hard one to love wholeheartedly. Isherwood is no slouch when it comes to prose. The writing is truly stunning. Unfortunately I spent most of my time reading it thinking about how beautiful the writing was instead of losing myself in the narrative and characters. A Single Man is light on plot and instead […]
