Don’t leave me hanging

York: The Shadow Cipher by Laura Ruby

April 9, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. This probably would have been 4 stars for me if it had come to a somewhat satisfying conclusion instead of a brutal cliffhanger. It’s a major pet peeve of mine when authors don’t make books in series, especially the first in a series, have a bit of closure so you feel like you’ve read something that feels halfway complete. It’s ok to make your readers want more, I just really hate feeling like I have to go on to the next book to […]

How do I become a math hero?

Zero Sum Game by S.L. Huang

April 2, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

This was such a fun book! I guess it was originally self published before being picked up by Tor? I would never have known, the writing quality is pretty good and the plot is well-crafted and honed. I love that Huang has created a science fiction thriller with a math hero at the center. Math hero sounds a bit dorky, but Cas Russell is very good at the kind of vector math that lets her calculate time, trajectory, speed, etc, making her very, very good […]

A Good Beginning

Sweet Little Lies by Caz Frear

March 17, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

This is a really solid start to what could be a great mystery series. A great option if you just want something fast and twisty that’s also well-written. I think I flew through this one in just a day or two, so it really is quick reading and it was exactly what I was looking for after the heartache of reading American Overdose. Cat Kinsella is a young detective with the Metropolitan Police Force with, of course, a dark past. She was just a kid […]

Very readable despite being a difficult topic

American Overdose by Chris McGreal

March 17, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

This book was exactly what I expected it would be: a well-written, well-researched dive into the forces that combined to create the American opioid crisis. I knew the basic outline of those forces, but reading in depth was eye opening and I came away pretty angry. Basically big pharma, the FDA, and congress all had a greed fueled opiate money orgy and fucked over Americans in the process. McGreal does a great job of organizing the massive amount of content and complex timeline into a […]

A mixed bag

Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud by Anne Helen Petersen

February 24, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

Anne Helen Petersen is a pretty great writer but as with any essay or short story collection, some are better than others. She’s trying to tackle all the biggest criticisms hurled at woman for daring to exist while not conforming to societal expections. Too Strong (Serena Williams), Too Fat (Melissa McCarthy), Too Gross (Abbi Jacobson & Illana Glazer), Too Slutty (Nicki Minaj), Too Old (Madonna), Too Pregnant (Kim Kardashian), Too Shrill (Hillary Clinton), Too Queer (Caitlyn Jenner), Too Loud (Jennifer Weiner), & Too Naked (Lena […]

Freshening up tired old tropes

Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse

February 24, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

This book was such a fun time. It’s one of those books that is full speed ahead once it starts and won’t let you go until the very end, which definitely left me wanting more. Maggie Hoskie is an orphan, someone who lacks a true home and family, but has a few people she is fond of. There’s the medicine man and her mentor who disappeared suddenly several months ago, and now a new person in her life, Kai, the grandson of the medicine man. […]
