Despite the good reviews on Goodreads, I was a bit wary of this graphic novel’s premise. Lonely man gets fembot for birthday could go in many directions, not all of them pleasant. But the first volume managed to win me over by exploring the murky morals of using a humanoid robot for any number of uses. The story starts slowly by examining Alex’s depressing, monotonous life, but things pick up when he’s gifted an android. Unfortunately the android’s presence only enhances Alex’s level of depression […]
From recluse to badass in one novel
4.5 stars. This book had me enthralled from start to finish. In Girl Waits With Gun, Amy Stewart tells the fictionalized story of a real life woman who was one of the first female deputies. The story is basically Constance Kopp’s origin story. Events start before she’d ever dreamed of entering law enforcement in 1914 when a rich silk man, Henry Kaufman, rams into the Kopp sister’s carriage. Much of the town witnessed this accident and it’s well established that Kaufman was at fault, so […]
Do yourself a favor and read this book
This book, this book, this book. How do you even begin to talk about something so meaningful and perfect? I gave up religion years ago, but Tiny Beautiful Things is my replacement bible. This book is for everyone. It’s the kind of book you just buy extra copies of in advance so you can give it away when needed and not have to risk lending out your own copy. I’ve been flirting with Strayed’s memoir, Wild, for a while now, but I’m kind of glad […]
Yet another enjoyable Bowen romance
Part of the reason I liked The Year We Fell Down so much is that it felt so realistic and relatable. The Year We Hid Away definitely stretched the boundaries of realistic, but at least the characters were still believable in how they dealt with their individual situations and fell for each other. I really liked both of the characters and that always goes a long way to making a romance lovable. Scarlet, previously Shannon, is escaping the nightmare of her family situation via her […]
Heartbreakingly Good
4.5 stars. This miiiiiiiight be the first celebrity memoir I’ve ever truly enjoyed enough to actually think about purchasing. (I’m not counting Ansari’s look into modern dating as a real memoir). I’ve always loved Alan Cumming’s work and he seems like a lovely person, but I’m experienced enough to know that likeability doesn’t always mean a memoir will be good. I’m happy to say that not only was Not My Father’s Son a strong piece of literature worth reading on its own merit, but I […]
This wonderful romance is currently FREE
So many cannonballers have raved about this romance series that I had to see what all the fuss was about. So glad I gave it a chance! I’m picky about romance, especially contemporary novels, but Bowen is a thoughtful writer who quickly drew me into the relationship between Corey and Adam. It’s Corey’s first year at Harkness College (basically a stand-in for Yale or Harvard) and she’s still dealing with a hockey accident that left her paralyzed less than a year ago. She was supposed […]
