The Lost Man by Jane Harper

May 19, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I didn’t think it was a good idea to start in on another mystery after falling so hard for The Dime, fearing that anything would suffer in comparison, but my library loan was expiring soon so I jumped into The Lost Man and hoped for the best. Turns out it was the best one two punch combo ever. They both have a western kind of feel and are slow burns. The Lost Man takes place in the same universe as Jane Harper’s wonderful Aaron Falk […]

Beloved by Roxane Gay, Rebecca Solnit, and America Ferrera

Eloquent Rage by Brittney Cooper

May 19, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

4.5 stars. Loved this book! True to its title, Brittney Cooper writes with very eloquent rage. I cannot wait to read more from her because she is a true force and her already strong writing is only going to get stronger. Very intersectional, Cooper is a good place to start for anyone wanting to learn more about intersections of privilege and why black women are (or have the right to be) so angry. Her style is very approachable because she is smart as hell and […]

Badass lesbian detectives ftw

The Dime by Kathleen Kent

May 5, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

4.5 stars. This book left me with a massive book hangover. Incredibly violent in almost every way, so just a content heads up if you’re thinking about reading this. If you like mysteries and you haven’t given this one a chance, I would snag it as soon as you can. Betty Rhyzyk is tough as fucking nails, not surprising since she comes from a long line of Brooklyn police detectives. She never thought she’d leave New York, but finds herself in Dallas with her partner […]

I’d like a refund on these man babies

Bowlaway by Elizabeth McCracken

May 5, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

2.5 stars. I picked this up after hearing someone gushing about Elizabeth McCracken’s writing, saying it was amazing and that I needed to read her right away, she’s a national treasure, yada yada yada. So when her new book came up in my library queue, I jumped in. Maybe I should have started with a different book of hers because I really struggled with Bowlaway. It’s bad bad bad when a 384 page books feels a million pages long. I loved the first 1/4 and […]

The Plotters by Un-su Kim

May 5, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

2.5 stars. The farther I get away from this book (haha, why do I suck at keeping up with reviews so much, I read this 2 months ago lolsob), the less I like it. And I didn’t particularly like it that well when I read it. It’s tough with translated fiction because who knows if it’s the translation you’re not liking, the original story, or if it’s just that the story doesn’t work well in a different language. This felt like it should be a […]

The grimmest of grim

The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang

April 14, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 3 Comments

The best way to describe this book is by saying it’s A LOT. Kuang has written something pretty epic here and kept me guessing the whole way through. The plot and writing style sucked me in, but I wouldn’t call this an easy read. It’s extremely grim and becomes progressively more disturbing as the narrative goes on. Well worth your time if you have the stomach for something that will repeatedly kick you in the face. Rin is an orphan who comes from a fairly […]
