Rae Carson is without a doubt my favorite author discovery of 2016. I went gaga over Walk the Earth a Stranger (still not over that terrible title) and The Girl of Fire and Thorns did not disappoint. (Many thanks to Malin for the rec!) This is a coming of age story about a smart and timid girl becoming a wise and powerful woman. She’s the second born daughter of a king and was chosen for greatness at her birth. The problem is that she doesn’t […]
A resounding meh
2.5 stars. I had heard wildly different opinions about this book before actually reading it, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve seen reviews lambasting it while others raved about it. And I’ve read more than a couple of think pieces lambasting it for its treatment of disabled people and a few defending the story. It feels a bit anticlimactic to read it and shrug my shoulders with a meh, but that’s exactly what happened. I can definitely see why the disabled community would […]
The female characters in 9 to 5 would probably approve
3.5 stars. The Assistants is just the kind of book that’s fun to read, but hard to find anything to say about it. To be fair, it probably would have been easier to review if I was up to date on my reviews and not writing it a month after finishing it. Yikes. Tina Fontana is the assistant to Robert Barlow, a multinational media mogul in the vein of Rupert Murdoch. He’s richer than God but Tina is the underpaid lackey who makes his life […]
Going back in time would be less horrible than previously thought
On a lark, I rented this from my library’s audiobook section. I’d heard of Goodman’s book, How to be a Victorian, but didn’t know she had a new one about the Tudors. Heck yes I want to learn how to be a Tudor! I can’t recommend this social history of the Tudor life enough. Goodman is a such a great writer! She’s clearly smart and knows her stuff, but the writing never feels dry or like a textbook. Her wit and enthusiasm for the subject […]
Bow down
How the fuck did I get to my thirties without having read Shirley Jackson!? I feel like my teachers, parents, and book-loving friends have all let me down by not foisting her writing upon me. I feel like most people read The Lottery in school, but for some reason I didn’t have it assigned to me. Shame on my teachers! We Have Always Lived in the Castle is creepy as hell. Merricat lives with her sister Constance and ailing Uncle Julian in the large estate […]
Writing so good you can taste it
Sweetbitter was a great summer read. It’s the story of Tess who comes to New York City after graduating from college in the midwest with a liberal arts degree. She somehow works her way into a job at a very prestigious restaurant despite having less than the bare minimum of required experience. What follows is a coming of age story filled with broken hearts, delicious food, and coke fueled nights. Apparently Danler worked at Union Square Cafe and pulled from her experiences to create the […]
