My CBR holiday gift exchange package arrived at just the right time when Alex, Approximately was exactly what I was in the mood to read. A young adult romance with emotions running high, life lessons, and swoony romance was just the thing to get me out of my post-Christmas funk. Essentially, this book is a modern, young adult take on The Shop Around the Corner story, but different enough that it doesn’t feel like a perfect retelling. There were little nods to its origin, but […]
Starting the year off right
3.5 stars. It’s always nice to start the year off with something good, so I’m pleased to report that this one actually mostly lived up to the hype. I’ve been meaning to read Leigh Bardugo for years and finally got around to it. Six of Crows ended up being great company to ring in the new year with. Essentially, this book is about a gang of criminals pulling off a high stakes heist. Picture a teenage, fantasy version of Ocean’s Eleven and you’re close. Except […]
An oldie, but a goodie
The other day my boss, who loves books, told me she hadn’t read any Jane Austen. Luckily we have the kind of relationship that made it possible for me to let loose a string of incredulous profanities. She loves subtle, witty, clever books with great characters so Austen is a perfect fit. I went in search of audiobook versions I could send her and realized Pride and Prejudice is the only full length Austen book I don’t own in audio form. Luckily, Prime members get […]
High pressure reading
Not going to lie, I was scared to read this. Not because of the story or writing, but because a friend gave it to me and billed it as their favorite book of all time. No pressure! I like good writing and enjoy lots of titles that would be classified as literary fiction, but some of just seems unnecessarily complicated. (Looking at you, authors who don’t use quotation marks. Punctuation exists for a reason y’all!) Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close uses a stream of consciousness […]
Something to read with all the lights on
I was gifted this book and told it was a great piece of YA literature featuring a well written female character. Going off that, I had no idea this was actually a bit of a thriller so I was a bit taken aback when I got into the main part of the plot. I don’t read a ton of thrillers and this might be my first YA thriller, so it was actually pretty fun to experience, just not what I was expecting. The person who […]
Mindless fun
I think going into this book I was expecting something more like the Shades of Magic series, rather than the paranormal mystery novel that it was. I enjoyed it nevertheless and plan on reading the next book in the series when I can get my hands on it. Like any origin story, there’s a lot of set-up in this first book of the series. It was fun entering this version of London with a dark, fantastical side, but the actual plot was a bit light. […]
