She’ll make you see stars WINK WINK

The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite

March 16, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

3.5 stars, rounding up What’s the opposite of a slow burn? A fast…frostbite? Except that implies that the story was in some way cold, which this is not. In my ongoing quest to hetdiversify my reading list, I find this markedly more enjoyable than both of the “logical + astrology” pairings. But there’s such a short bit of At First Sight Antagonism, and I realized that that is something I’m very into. Lucy and Catherine see each other, have a bit of a misunderstanding, realize […]

The Bit Character Speaks

Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu

March 13, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I’d say this is a 3.5 star book that I’m rounding up! I really enjoyed the whole conceit, but similar to how I think people viewed the Seinfeld finale, the final step of said conceit veered a bit off for my enjoyment. This is a very meta book, where our main character (Asian Man) is both a person and a background character in a by-the-numbers police procedural, whose filming itself veers between scripted TV and improved real life(?). It’s satire and yet very grounded in […]

Book Club Re-Read: Binti

Binti by Nnedi Okorafor

March 10, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Original review, July 2018: Awkward writing hampers an otherwise nuanced and interesting novella Re-read review: Picked this up again for Book Club tonight. My reviews have certainly gotten longer–I read this in 2018, and had only just begun to dip my toes into reading (!) again, much less writing 500 word reviews of things I’d read. I think I still agree with my original synopsis, although perhaps not for the same reasons that I originally had while writing it. I read this book for the […]

Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers

March 9, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I think there’s a really great story about Dr. Grace Porter, newly minted astronomy PhD (just astronomy, nothing more specific than that) suddenly realizing that the semi-sheltered world of academia and the years she’s spent studying haven’t prepared her to deal with being an adult almost-30 human being. This story involves a cast of quirky(tm) friends (a veritable bingo card of characteristics and personalities), unresolved issues, and lots of good, honest work that takes place over time. Also I think I would kill for her […]

It was indeed a fresh breath

Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera

March 8, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

A recommendation by polyesque! I ended up liking this but I not loving it! I think part of that could have been alleviated by my figuring out a bit sooner that this book was taking place much earlier than I thought it did–perhaps the lack of cell phones should have done it, but I spent a good portion thinking that Juliet was in the 2020s or maybe the 2010s, which gives a very different veneer to many of the ideas that she’s encountering. The author’s […]

Klara, go off to a beach and get some sun

Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

March 8, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Two stars is “I think it was ok” but in the realm of reviews, which have somehow normalized a three to be normal and two to be HAZARD AHEAD (and one star, obviously, bad in a way that is worthy of extreme note) this seems harsh to be rated as two stars even though at the end of the day it is, simply, ok. I really liked Never Let Me Go where I didn’t know the ending but did know the twist (aka I knew that all […]
