Nothing wrong with seeking out things that you know you’ll like

Shit, Actually: The Definitive, 100% Objective Guide to Modern Cinema by Lindy West

April 2, 2021 by wicherwill 5 Comments

Oooh I just realized this makes my 52nd reviewed work of the year and my first Cannonball!!! Look, this is not a useful review by any stretch. If the following comment makes you nod and say, EXACTLY: There’s this part in book six where Harry holds Quidditch tryouts for Gryffindors only and is like, “Yeah, I don’t know any of these people.” HOW? There are 150 of you tops and you all live in a tower together and eat treacle tart family style every day! […]

I should have known better than to read this book

The Duke and I by Julia Quinn

April 2, 2021 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Content warnings: reproductive coercion I did not like this book, but maybe would have given it three stars if I wasn’t so irate by what I honestly already knew was coming, which is some shady business around one of my “favorite” pet peeves. I also know that general consensus has the latter books are better than this book, and maybe I will get around to reading them. But for now, I am just going to get grumpy and rage-y about this book. First off, a […]

A hurricane that never lets up

Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor

April 1, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Content warnings: rampant homophobia and sexism From NPR’s review: Brutality abounds, and the violence, often directed at women and gay people, is so close to real events that it almost qualifies as nonfiction. This is not an easy book to read, for multiple reasons. The first and most obvious reason is clear when you open the book and start getting a few pages in–you’ll quickly flip through and realize that yes, there is not a single paragraph break to be seen. Melchor has taken the verbosity […]

Bookticle Club, Now with 100% More Murderbot

All Systems Red by Martha Wells

March 31, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Re-read for Bookticle Club, March 2021: what a diametric opposite to the book I am currently reading, Hurricane Season. I’ll say that I noticed two things in particular this time. I read this entire thing at a stretch very late at night, and was definitely falling asleep a bit towards the end but it had nothing to do with my enjoyment! I will also note that this was my choice, and I had originally said we’d do a romance novel, and this is…not that. First was […]

Casting couch jokes land a bit differently these days

Pretty Face by Lucy Parker

March 29, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I’d actually have rated this slightly lower if I could have, but as is the usual in reviews 2* seems horrific, and I’m well aware that my issues are specific to me and things that I tend to dislike. That thing being mismatched power dynamics, whether in the sense of age (much older man to a younger woman), power (boss/employee, teacher/student), etc. As you can imagine, this book–which has both the age and career issues–was always going to be an uphill battle. At the end […]

Track down this book (used copies abound)

Wise Child by Monica Furlong

March 28, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This is a book that is very worthwhile despite being somewhat hard to track down (although, as it were, not as hard as the sequel/prequel, Juniper). Wise Child is a great example of the value of a well-funded school district. I cannot begin to count the number of books that I was recommended by my middle school librarian (hi Ms. Miller!), who would patiently roam the aisles with me after school while I was waiting to be picked up. This is one of them, though, and […]
