Delight in Violence for sure, but not entirely the book I was looking for

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

April 6, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

There were things I liked about this book (the fashion! the sombre realities of colonialism!) but they were largely outweighed by clunky writing that’s simultaneously too verbose and too brief. Not to malign youth, but I upon reaching the author bio and seeing that Gong is currently a student at UPenn I definitely had a moment of “ah, yes, makes sense.” These Violent Delights is not, as I initially thought, a retelling of Romeo and Juliet in 1920s Shanghai. It’s obviously not not that (all the characters make an […]

Didn’t even try to visualize anyone other than Chris H as the lead in this one

Mr. Impossible by Loretta Chase

April 5, 2021 by wicherwill 4 Comments

Another Cannonball recommendation by Malin after I expressed how much I liked The Last Hellion! And a shout out to Jen K’s review because yes, Chris H as Rupert. It’s clear that while I enjoy historical romances I really don’t abide period-appropriate restrictions on the heroines. Part and parcel of the enjoyment means having to put up with heros who have a long list of former paramours (and no STIs, magically) and heroines who are hindered by society or petticoats or chaperones and sometimes all […]

A lovely book that just wasn’t entirely for me

Beloved by Toni Morrison

April 5, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I feel like a little shit for rating this three stars in the middle of a slew of historical England romance novels that feature colonies as exotic backdrops but I think I can reasonably separate what I think is a moving story from my personal issues with style and choice of medium. I’ve wondered a lot at what we consider “high literature” and what makes for literature vs “easy reading.” I actively try and pick books from both sides of the coin, alternating between the […]

That’s right, the five star club has a new member

The Last Hellion by Loretta Chase

April 3, 2021 by wicherwill 2 Comments

A recommendation by Malin! Yeah okay I debated whether to give this a four star or a five star review and then thought SCREW IT. I really, really enjoyed this one. Every time I was ready to be disappointed by the next plot turn, with the inevitable meeting of my modern day sensibilities with the realities of 1800s England gentry, Chase surprised me with time-appropriate plot resolutions that made my little romance novel loving heart sing. In glancing through some of the less-than-glowing reviews, people seemed […]

ART is everyone’s favorite

Artificial Condition by Martha Wells

April 3, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Re-read review: I am currently #70 on the list of holds for book number 6 in the Murderbot series (Fugitive Telemetry) so at this sedate pace I should be able to re-read the entire series by the time it finally comes off of hold. Interestingly enough I was more so-so on Murderbot 1 (All Systems Red) the first time around and much more gung ho the second. This time, I was ever so slightly less into Murderbot’s adventures, but some review of my feelings later I realize […]

A difficult to find book but very worthwhile read

Juniper by Monica Furlong

April 2, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Can she save her father’s kingdom from an evil sorceress? ^^ that’s the blurb on the front of this book and while, technically, yes, also ugh no. Set after the timeline sequel Wise Child but written after, Juniper follows the titular character on the first part of her journey from the spoiled, only child and princess of a local king/chieftain in England in the early days of Christianity to the powerful, peaceful, centered doran we know she becomes. And yes, she has to fight a sorceress who is threatening her father’s […]
