Not quite The Hating Game but excellent secondary characters

Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne

May 17, 2021 by wicherwill 2 Comments

Like many people, I really liked The Hating Game and was so-so on 99 Percent Mine. This is another 3.5 star book but rounded down, because as an adult woman who lives in the world I never quite was able to lower my haunches where our male lead (Teddy) was concerned. As I noted re: Just Last Night, you need have both growth and tropes to get to a earnt HEA. My issue here was that Teddy never really earned the right to his HEA, especially after spending a […]

The rope you climb becomes the rope that binds you

Ghachar Ghochar by Vivek Shanbhag

May 17, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Maybe I’m just a little bit biased because my name shows up in this book! I’ll give it a 3.5 star, but rounded up although at the end of the day it is a pretty standard story. This is a quirky little gothic-y book by way of Bangalore. It’s a very condensed version of the White Tiger story of what it takes to rise in Indian society, and the people you crush along the way like so many small ants. I enjoyed not feeling “too dumb” for […]

Cute romance with deftly handled depth

Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane

May 17, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Content warning: descriptions of [past abuse] Adam Driver, patron saint of ugly hot, is definitely the mental image I had in mind for Fin, who I assume is the cartoon dude on the cover. This book was…not what I was expecting and a pretty lovely ride (ha) nonetheless. In my mind, what makes for a good romance novel is a proper blend of growth and tropes which together “earn” the HEA. McFarlane appears to have the formula on lock and so is able to branch […]

This book goes to eleven

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

May 12, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Midway through I was very grumpy and wanted to give this a lower review, but upon finishing I’m a feeling a bit more charitable and so three star it is. To summarize this book in comparison to Weir’d well known debut (which I will spoil in general sense below): take every plot arc in The Martian and dial it waaaay up. To elaborate: The Martian was subtitled amongst some subset of audiences as “a fantasy of what we could do if NASA had a fully funded budget and […]

Finally getting around to reading this–it’s not nearly as difficult as I thought!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

May 10, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CW: drunk driving What is this book not? I think it might be more helpful to frame what I did like that way. It’s not #ownvoices, a few times over–Reid (Jenkins Reid?) is a white, straight author (who, by her own admission, is not always very feminine presenting) writing about biracial, queer characters. I didn’t check midway through, but there were parts–I’m thinking of a passage where Monique was discussing her to her biracial identity, very near the start of the story, that rung a bit…odd, […]

enjoyable book made great by an unorthodox ending

The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth

May 9, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Original quick review: Hard to review this book without major spoilers, and I was behind on reviews. Tl;dr it’s a classic 4 star / Book I Recommend combo, which is my way of basically creating a 4.5 star category. Color me utterly shocked that it landed a really tricky ending which feels true to the characters, their drives and their histories! More fulsome review: There’s a lot going on in this book, which I assumed was a simple story in the vein of many that […]
