Very specific genre of older gay men romance, please give me all

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley

June 21, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Pride continueth with the book which (I thought) closed out my Goodreads reading challenge (as it were, Goodreads did its thing and thought I’d read something twice). So herein is a genre, I feel: the soft shy (gay) man under the heel of The Man falls for the calm aloof quirky gay man who is being investigated by The Man. I felt so very many shades of The House in the Cerulean Sea while reading this, although I did have to double check to make sure that […]

Not on par with her best, but even at her worst she’s a good read

Aetherbound by E.K. Johnston

June 21, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

cw: food deprivation (nothing that turns into starvation, but it’s pretty close) Johnston, as an author, oscillates between great and meh for me. That averages out to above average, so I’ll continue reading her books as they come out, but it does make for a lot of heightened expectations which don’t always bear fruit. This book, unfortunately, falls into that latter camp–I jumped it to the top of my TBR list but don’t think it necessarily deserved the treatment. Exit, Pursued by a Bear is one […]

A very specific genre done well: romances in the Pacific Northwest

We Can't Keep Meeting Like This by Rachel Lynn Solomon

June 21, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I’ve read two of Solomon’s books, and she’s definitely got a knack for writing believable, flawed, realistically sexy relationships that are infused with her special sauce–namely, Seattle + Semites (of the Jewish varietal). If I had to rank this book, I’d say it falls below Today Tonight Tomorrow and on par with The Ex Talk. To get the top line out first: Quinn’s stress and anxiety and Driving Force take the wind of the sails of the book you think you’re going to get from reading the blurb–one […]

Dragons and Humans Go Together like…Oil and Water

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

June 21, 2021 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Recommended by Ellesfena: https://everyday-offershub.com/2021/05/tess-of-the-road-ellesfena/ This makes for an interesting book to review. Yes, I think it’s a three star book even though I enjoyed it quite a bit and will definitely continue to read the second book in the duology (and then read the third book, which is in the same world but a different set of characters? Not entirely certain how they connect, and I don’t want to figure out because, ofc, spoilers). My main gripe is that I was very into the world […]

Clearly I just need…different Greek myth retellings

Neon Gods by Katee Robert

June 8, 2021 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Thanks to Emmalita for the rec (https://everyday-offershub.com/2021/03/ne%E2%80%A6%29 What was I saying about not reading Greek myth retellings? Clearly I just need to make sure that I’m reading the right ones. This one is a right one. This one is…HOT. Look, I like read a lot of smutty smut smut PWP and now, purged of some of my inner judgement around what “counts” and “doesn’t count” as “reading,” I’m pretty happy to talk about it. And let me tell you, this is a seriously sexy book […]

OMG I just got it, she’s stuck on the Q train like the QUEER train is that it???

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston

June 8, 2021 by wicherwill 3 Comments

It’s not THAT hard, I saw “new book from the author of Red, White & Royal Blue” and immediately put it on hold. And then proceeded to haunt all my libraries until one decided to buy it. To get the obvious bits out of the way: do I like this as much as I liked RW&RB? I can’t really remember, but I think perhaps not quite as much. From what I remember, at least, RW&RB might have a number of fantastical elements (our president is a Texas Democrat […]
