White Whale Finally Caught (there’s another right behind it)

The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson

October 16, 2021 by wicherwill 6 Comments

White Whale: My brother has been telling me to read these books for two years now! THIS was actually the last book I had on my backlog of reviews, I swear, and it’s not even in the backlog–I just finished it! This definitely gets categorized on the (one of many) white whale novels shelf, because I read the first book over two years ago on the advice of my brother, and then promptly decided since I didn’t need to read the next one right away (no obvious […]

I know I always complain about book series that don’t have an end BUT I WANT MORE

Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman

July 26, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Travel: because I actually really liked the majority of this book where Seraphina is just traveling from one city to another, trying to do her thing Wow, people really don’t like this book. I, on the other hand, squandered a perfectly good sleep head start to the week to stay up and finish this book and was nigh inconsolable afterwards because [WHAT IS ORMA’S MIND PEARL TRIGGER???? IS IT IN THE NEXT BOOK (Tess of the Road??? I NEED TO KNOW]. So if I address the […]

Definitely an old series–that holds up really well

Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar

Wayside School is Falling Down by Louis Sachar

Wayside School Gets A Little Stranger by Louis Sachar

Wayside School Beneath the Cloud of Doom by Louis Sachar

Old Series: the newest installment in this series comes 25 years(!) after the last, and 44(!!!) years since the first A mild content warning for some old school “humor” around kids being fat which didn’t age the best but is also not used in a bullying way Sideways Stories from Wayside School In advance of reading the new(!) fourth installment in this delightful series, I thought I’d re-read the original three in rapid succession. I have fond memories of these books and their particular brand […]

An epic (ha) recommendation

Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips

July 23, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Mythic: definitely a twist on [Orpheus / Eurydice] within the pantheon of the Grecian God myths! Hmmm as I periodically think, I wish Goodreads let you give book half star ratings because this definitely positively falls under a 3.5 star rating. I think I wasn’t as into this as I thought I would be given the blurb, and then towards the end I was very into it and pretty shocked to find out that I only had about half an hour left–not because I thought […]

Perfectly serviceable humorous memoir about someone who seems to have his head on straight despite ingesting a truly scary amount of drugs

Yearbook by Seth Rogen

July 22, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Gateway: into one of the only non-fiction genres I read, “memoirs written by comedic writers.” This is a great one to start with, seeing as how there’s more understanding and context to Rogen’s adventures than some of the older memoirs that might not have aged 100% well. For example, I appreciate very much that Rogen prefaces some of his drug escapades with the disclaimer that he gets away with stuff because he is a white man. So ymmv but for me this book was 50% […]

The cover of this book is as gorgeous as the writing inside it

Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender

July 22, 2021 by wicherwill 3 Comments

They She He: what else could this book be?! Our main character, Felix, is a transgender [boy] of 17 who is figuring out his gender identity while figuring out who’s the transphobic prick in his school while figuring out how to get a boyfriend I’m surprised by how much I liked this book! Which is because usually stories about teenagers + love make me side eye just a little–I’m sorry I’m sorry! It’s just the way it is, I am just a bit cynical. For example, I […]
