As always, I’ll read all the non-fiction if it’s about science 🤓

Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void by Mary Roach

November 30, 2021 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Hmm I really did like this one, although I will admit that there are some overlaps with Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers around utilizing cadavers to experiment with some of the rocket capabilities. One of the most interesting things I learnt in high school physics was the utter logistical impossibility of leaving planet Earth. We’ve got no other options, people, there is no Wall-E way to get us off this planet with enough supplies to keep us going. The fuel costs are exorbitant as is, […]

I’ll read anything to get some of the magic of The Toast back T-T

Hey Ladies!: The Story of 8 Best Friends, 1 Year, and Way, Way Too Many Emails by Michelle Markowitz, Caroline Moss

November 26, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

In a nutshell: this book is funny but the premise does wear thin after a while. Fleshed out: there’s some really keen insights on a very specific subset of the world–women in NYC who are “friends” but also not and don’t really have “real careers” through a combination of chutzpah and family wealth and are always into “wellness” and being “woke” but also have cleaners whose nationality and/or name they could not produce if needed. I am lucky to say that I do not know […]

A unique, YA additional to the sparse male friendship genre

Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram

November 26, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

A while back I was trawling for books about male friendships, which is surprisingly (or not) a pretty tall ask. There’s like, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. If you narrow it further, and look for ownvoices it’s even more sparse. That being said, books about female friendships? DIME A DOZEN, in every flavor you’d like (toxic, childhood, best, broken, lifelong, etc etc). One note that was promising–when looking for stories about male friendships, I did run into a wealth of novels about friendships-or-not-friendships-that-turned-into-love. It’s amazing that the […]

Late recommendation for Halloween if you’re looking for a sparkly romance

The Ex-Hex by Erin Sterling, Rachel Hawkins

November 26, 2021 by wicherwill 4 Comments

Oof what a sparkling, witty book that plays in a different sandbox from Seven Days in June but shows a different (and I would argue, better) way to approach the trope of “we met when we were young and are re-meeting years later.” Whenever I read books, I’m always thinking about what I think should happen next. It’s not always good from a literary perspective (e.g., I want characters to just talk and clear up some lingering confusion, but then we’d lose dramatic tension) but what feels right and […]

Hilarious but uneven!

Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

November 26, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This book was, ultimately, a bit uneven and as such alternatingly held and lost my interest. The premise is great–it’s not a romance novel, it’s a romance wrapped in a larger story about a woman who has constantly put the feelings of others first and is learning to prioritize herself. It’s beautifully written and evocative and makes you feel. But as it were, I found myself growing less invested in the story of Eva and Shane as the book went on, which is…not what you want […]

Not a fruitful weekend

Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean

October 18, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Just 2/2 this past weekend with books with characters that irritated me–characters that act in ways that seem contradictory to their stated goals, for the purposes of creating tension. Which is funny because in this book we have a fish out of water teenager who learns that she is actually a member of the Japanese royal family! There is already many opportunities for drama! It would also be fair to admit that I was, at almost all points, comparing this novel to the Undisputed Queen […]
