first up for Tessa Dare, but wasn’t the last!

Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare

March 12, 2022 by wicherwill 2 Comments

Someone’s review says: “Charlotte unravels the mystery of Piers while he just unravels” and while I cannot remember this book very well, having read it almost two months ago I remember even at that time reading that line and thinking that it tracked very well. What can I say about this book? THIS IS WHY I NEED TO WRITE REVIEWS AS I FINISH BOOKS. But also, we’re being kind to myself, and so it’s okay that I got behind. A thing that makes me giggle: […]

this book derailed january for me, in some ways, and put a dent in 2022 reading :/

Rosewater by Tade Thompson

March 12, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This is the first in a trilogy, so I feel bad in faulting it for being incomplete, but this just felt very incomplete in a way that frustrated me (and, as you can see by how long it took me to finish, it also put a real dent in my reading for January). This novel has a cool set up and a mishmosh of genres, and of course I am all here for any sort of scifi novel that entirely sidesteps centering Western norms for […]

and now, for something completely different

Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

March 12, 2022 by wicherwill 2 Comments

Wow, people are really divided on this book, aren’t they? It’s like “5 stars amazing best thing ever” and “1 star this is drivel did no one tell the author that blood sausages weren’t sold during WW2?” and literally nothing in between. I find myself not quite in between–the dreaded three star, I don’t really have an opinion, but here are 500 words on this book anyway–but this was definitely a book that a) grew on me and b) washed over me. One thing I […]

some out of season books courtesy procrastination

Duke, Actually by Jenny Holiday

March 12, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

The thing I liked BEST about this book is the length of time the story took: a FULL YEAR, my friends! That’s right, between when this story started and when it finished an entire calendar year (one Christmas to the next, if I’m not mistaken) passes! That’s an entire year of our main characters getting to know one another, becoming friends, getting closer…the stuff that all my romantic dreams are made of. Here in the other corner we have 80% of romance novels, wherein characters […]

what a ridiculous, ridiculous book

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey

March 12, 2022 by wicherwill 1 Comment

I REALLY wish I’d written the review for this sooner, because I remember this being just the most ridiculous book and probably would have written a nicely scathing review had I gotten around to doing so on time. Instead, we will have scathe by proxy as I try to piece together what I thought from the four parts I highlighted. Here is what this book is not, I suppose: a tense thriller, a whodunit, a murder mystery, a psychological treatise on humanity or any combination […]

Read this while waiting for food that was an hour late and it did make the time fly by

Well Matched by Jen DeLuca

March 12, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

The issue with putting off reviews until (looks at calendar) almost a month and a half after reading a book is that you start to forget what on earth happened in these books to make you give them the ratings you did! I think my biggest issue with this book–from what I remember at least, mea culpa mea culpa–is that the conceit is a bit much for me to take. You have to believe that April has spent twelve years (TWELVE) as a sort of […]
