Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert

June 12, 2022 by wicherwill 2 Comments

I might be rounding up for this book–I picked this up because I really loved Neon Gods, but these next two entries just haven’t really kept my attention as much. This time around, the old Ares (head of Olympus’ armed forces) has passed away. The spot of Ares is filled with the victor of a series of physical trials–sort of a American Ninja/Triwizard maze/Gladiator set. Helen (of Troy), in this series one of the sisters of the current Zeus (nee Perseus) and a member of one […]

Excellent sequel (not follow up) to the first book

The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian

June 12, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CW from author: blood, main character who survived dangerous pregnancy and for whom any future pregnancy would be dangerous (note: there is no pregnancy in this book), past arrest and imprisonment, gun violence, non-graphic allusion to sexual assault, elderly parent with Alzheimer’s disease, postpartum depression I might be rounding up from 4.5 to 5, but I’m so happy with this book that we’re going to five star it. I think I’ve been a bit stingy with the 5s in favor of 4s, so there might […]

STEMinist take 2

Stuck with You by Ali Hazelwood

June 12, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I liked this novella a tad more than I liked the prior one in the series, Under One Roof, both of which are well-retooled prior stories. As before, the three main characters (including the one from the next novella) are friends and women in STEM, hence the term STEMinist. Which, to reiterate, I don’t love but I also don’t hate. If I had to clarify why this novella worked for me more than the prior one, I would say that it doesn’t mince words as to […]

another recommendation that I definitely should have listened to earlier

Witchmark by C.L. Polk

June 10, 2022 by wicherwill 3 Comments

I have no idea why I didn’t pick this up when my library card sister Sandhya was reading them. Something about the covers? They sort of looked like super generic trilogy-of-magic and I wasn’t really feeling the vibe, despite not having even cracked the first one open. Clearly, that was a mistake. It does take a bit to get into the novel–I found it pretty easy to set it aside when I first started. But once the outlines of the magic system started to take […]

this felt like #ownvoices a bit, and from the author’s note seems like it was

Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney

CW: racism (white/non-Black characters use the n-word, written as “n-word,” in action adjacent to the main characters; typical racist arguments are made about affirmative action, etc–these are precipitating events for our protagonist to realize that she isn’t actually cool with such incidents) Last of the books from my backlog and then I’m caught up with reviews!!! This is another book that I cannot remember the source of–I checked it out and then read it in pretty short order. Probably the last of the random reads, […]

Cool for the Summer by Dahlia Adler

June 5, 2022 by wicherwill 1 Comment

CW: mild homophobia when characters come out, but it’s contextualized very quickly I think this came across my Kindle because it’s the already released novel of an author whose next novel was featured in Goodreads’ “Books We’re Looking Forward To” or “Celebrating Pride Month.” It’s definitely something I picked up and then read within a few days, which is not something that happens often given how stacked by TBR list is and how choreographed my hold/loan dances are with the various library cards I have […]
