wicherwill's Reviews:

will definitely without question be one of the best things I’ve read all year (although there’s lots of releases in the latter half of the year)

A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers

August 11, 2022 by wicherwill 2 Comments

How to explain this book? This book is: – the feeling of a Sunday where the only thing you have to do is sleep, brush your teeth, and putter around – a warm hug from your favorite person – spending an afternoon with that friend who instinctively knows exactly how much or little conversation you can handle – platonic cuddles on a pleasantly full stomach when you’re pleasantly warm – wearing the perfectly right clothes for the weather – perfect word play that brings laughter […]

Home Field Advantage by Dahlia Adler

August 11, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CWs, copied from the author: all the misogyny, all the homophobia, and a car accident death (offscreen, but discussed often) and also abortion/a miscarriage. I respect Dahlia Adler because while many authors have a tendency to write their romantic leads into a difficult situation (looking at you, innumerable romance novelists and also Linda Holmes), Adler has the guts to keep them there and not give them the “easy out.” In this case, the “star” quarterback of a middling-to-bad Texas football team dies in a car […]

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

August 11, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Props to my friend Aileen the Coolest Person Ever for this recommendation! How to describe this book? I think I’ve gotten so used to books with hooks or gimmicks that I found myself at odds trying to explain to other friends what exactly I’d just read and why I really hadn’t been able to put it down. The thing is, there’s not much of a gimmick here. Elizabeth Zott is a female chemist in a time when that’s not a thing. She battles sexism–unrelently, unmitigated […]

it’s a good thing when your biggest complaint is that you wanted more book

A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow

August 11, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

The thought that sticks with me: I really, really wish that Harrow would combine these books into one proper sit down novel that includes the interstitial bits which we only hear about in passing. We meet Zinnia Grey, formerly ‘dying girl’ turned into intrepid multiverse Sleeping Beauty saver. She’s made a job (of sorts) out of jumping from one Sleeping Beauty story to another, trying to help each Aurora escape whatever evil they’re trapped within. In one passage, Harrow does what probably cost the MCU […]

A Christmas Party by Georgette Heyer

August 11, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Recommendation by auntadadoom! I have lots of conflicted feelings about Heyer, namely of the “she’s a trash human being” variety. Is it okay-er for an author who has long since passed, when there are plenty more trash human beings whose books we do read? Not entirely certain! Having read quite a few of Heyer’s Regency thoroughly researched frippery books, to the point where I was hitting a string of forgettable ones, I was pretty excited to pick up something completely different! This time, a Christmas-themed […]

They Never Learn by Layne Fargo

August 11, 2022 by wicherwill 4 Comments

This is not a case of false advertising–I went into this book fully amped up to read about a female serial killer who makes a career out of offing terrible men whose crimes fall outside the purview of the judicial system. Zero issues there, honestly! But what I couldn’t get into was the tone of the whole thing. It seemed to veer at times: between showing what scary competence can look like, to having Scarlett make some uncharacteristic mistakes, to a historical plot that’s meant […]
