Double header re-read in advance of another trilogy finale

Beartown by Fredrik Backman

Us Against You by Fredrik Backman

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I never wrote a review for this one because it was before my quest to review everything I’ve read, but I really wish I had because my view on these books has changed pretty dramatically in the three and a half years it’s been since I first picked these up on the recommendation of my good friend and voracious bibliophile Aileen. Things I still think are true: Backman is one of my favorite authors writing today, for all that I’ve only read his works in […]

Heartbreaker by Sarah MacLean

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

What I do remember of this novel is that there’s a lot of context that’s vaguely anachronistic (e.g., lots of characters who have leeway to travel alone and cause all sorts of mayhem) but it’s all in service of a good cause. I always root for MacLean heroines, as you can see by the speed with which I finished this one (less than a day, and that might have been in travel as well). This one also sticks out to me as being quite spicy […]

Read too early for Halloween, but the review is in December so who’s counting

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This book isn’t quite as fun as the prior in the same series, but I’m glad to see how far Sterling can stretch the premise of her little universe. Here, we follow the cousin of Vivienne of The Ex Hex fame (now happily wifed up with Rhys Penhallow) (or maybe not wifed, but definitely partnered). Gwyn is happy running her quirky witchy store in Graves Glen, the former seat of power of the Penhallow family. Who shows up but another Welsh brother, and since this is Romanlandia, they only […]

Nora is at it again! Medicine in ye olde ages blows, people

The Surgeon's Daughter by Audrey Blake

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I find myself really enjoying this series and looking forward to seeing where it goes next. In this installment, we follow Nora as she attempts to gain a medical education–a real one–in Italy, where they teach female medical students and sexism is solved and everything is great. JK you know that nothing is that simple. Nora is in Italy and finds herself facing many issues that wouldn’t be so out of date for a woman of the modern world: fellow student (male) doctors who are […]

Re-reads in anticipation of the last–Scholomance delivers

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

The Last Graduate by Naomi Novik

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Re-re-read in advance of The Golden Enclaves, September 2022 Knowing now what I know about how this book is actually a semi-subversive (and by which I mean not at all subversive, was I just under a rock this whole while?) pushback on JKR’s Wizarding World(TM), it’s doubly fascinating to re-re-enter the world of the Scholomance through the eyes of El, our crotchety crocheting evil enchantress in the making. I had read once that Novik wrote Scholomance in a response to the logical inconsistencies of the Potterverse, […]

gift from malin

when you don’t know where to start…turf the request to the infallible Malin

December 19, 2022 by wicherwill 1 Comment

I have been wanting to try Discworld for so long, but sort of like Doctor Who, it’s just…a lot, for someone who didn’t grow up with it/around it (ducks to avoid the shrieks). What is a Discworld? How does one start? Where does one go? The things I hear about it make me want to read it so VERY much, but it’s like every white whale of a book x 1000 because there’s seemingly a thousand million books in this series. Is it even about a […]
