I don’t want this one to be over :( (but I think maybe it won’t be?)

The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill 6 Comments

First, for whomever needs to hear this: if you don’t remember the prior books in great detail, worry not. I was quite stressed that I wouldn’t remember enough to understand what was going on, but as always Sanderson is a reader’s writer and knows how to seamlessly remind you of the most salient points such that you can take a ride with him. Now, at the end of all things, I find myself in awe of what Sanderson managed to do over the course of […]

definitely an always-read author, in a chill way

See You Yesterday by Rachel Lynn Solomon

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Are we in the Pacific Northwest? Are our leads Jewish? It must be a Rachel Lynn Solomon novel! I kindly jest, because I find Solomon a pretty engaging writer, especially when she’s writing about younger characters (Today Tonight Tomorrow remains my favorite, I think). This time, we tackle ones of literature/media’s timeless, repetitive tropes in a college setting… That’s right, what we have here is a garden variety time loop adventure. The negatives, to get out of the way out, are that the time loop-iness of […]

I want to like it!

Ship Wrecked by Olivia Dade

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

The thing is that I want to like Dade a lot more than I actually do. I keep putting these books on hold hoping that I’ll enjoy the execution as much as the premise, but as it were there’s a consistent mismatch. Of all the novels so far, as it were, I think that this book held the most promise for me. I am a sucker for relationships built over time and UST banter, and the set up here seems ideal: Maria and Peter are […]

It was too short and also I don’t want any more

Even Though I Knew the End by C.L. Polk

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I feel like I might have gotten around to putting this on hold eventuallly, but credit for being first on the hold list goes to emmalita! My biggest issue with this novel was how short it was! Given how much happened, and how rich the world felt, I’m frankly shocked to find out that it’s the equivalent of 144 pages. Reading on an e-reader really messes with your sense of length… My biggest issue with Polk’s prior trilogy (The Kingston Trilogy) was that her political message […]

volumes 1 and 2 in a lovely Victorian romance series

The Siren of Sussex by Mimi Matthews

The Belle of Belgrave Square by Mimi Matthews

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

What a fascinating book, with a beautiful cover to boot—a nice departure from that paper cutout cartoon design that everyone has deemed the style du jour. Mimi Matthews is also a nonfiction author and a Victorian era historian, both of which come across very strongly in this novel. The main characters are a half-Indian tailor and a blue stocking equestrian, and for once the ethnic backgrounds and occupations don’t seem superfluous to the main plot. Evelyn is looking to make a match on the marriage […]

yes, yes, I should have read this already

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

My first thought while reading this: there are authors and there are Authors, whose reach is seen everywhere. I think there’s been a large number of books I’ve read this year or in recent time that owe a large debt of gratitude towards Le Guin’s short (some 30 odd pages) story on the society of the Omelas. If you’ve never read it, then steer clear if you really want to avoid spoilers but Le Guin does give away the punchline in her author’s note (the […]
