less successful but still amusing second entry in series

Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

In this iteration, Maxwell takes us back to her general universe but in an entirely different quadrant (?), with a new set of main characters, motivations, et al. It’s a gutsy move, given how invested the audience was in the world of Taam and Jainan from Winter’s Orbit. As a result, you can clearly tell that there’s a vague formula that Maxwell is trying to reapply in this iteration. We’ve got the damaged one (in this case Tennal, the royal/connected one) and the less obviously damaged […]

The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I had this grand plan to breeze through all of these on a weekend, since once the first two come off of hold the rest of them are readily available at my library. Foolish me, I should have realized that these are substantial length novels that would take a substantial amount of time to complete. Fun side bar, I also discovered that I checked a number of these out from the NYPL back in 2016? But I feel like I’d remember if I’d actually read […]

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

On the surface this should be my jam–old lovers reunited is one of my favorite tropes, and even more so when there’s a friendship at play as well. Plus small town dynamics? All the way! But I had many issues with Persephone and how she’s written as a character, which is to say she’s just a foil for Fortune to hang a romance on. Nothing makes sense about how she ditches her best friend (a Token Character of Color, to boot) in the Big City […]

The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CW: sexual assault (off screen), death, basically think refugee crisis Most of my review of this book will end up being a rambling discourse on who gets to write novels, identity-wise. This book, about a Syrian refugee who was a beekeeper in Aleppo and is now attempting to escape to the UK where his cousin has settled, was written by a white (British?) fiction novelist who, to be fair, volunteered in the refugee camps outside of/in Athens, I believe. Edited to add: she is also the daughter […]

detailed ‘heavy’ sci-fi at its finest

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This is definitely another off the long White Whale list, as I think I’ve checked it out from the library a number of times before finally cracking it open this time around. Best “you’d like this if you liked” that I can give is likely Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. What an excellent, well thought out sci-fi novel—entirely standalone, if you want to, but with additional installments afterwards that expand on the themes here. The concept at the heart is directed evolution, and how it […]

and now for something a bit different

The Witches of Moonshyne Manor by Bianca Marais

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

What a quirky book, but one that I found lovely in its own way. The focus is on the friendship between four old women who have, over time, created a home together in a eccentric manor where they can be themselves. There’s a lot of messaging around identity and found family which was well done, coupled with some more heavy handed messaging around, like, MRAs or anti-female energy which I felt was a bit 2D. The plot seems a lot more confusing from the blurb […]
