Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll

December 15, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Recommendation from Aileen! I suppose some mild spoiler alerts for what this book apparently is–thinly veiled shade towards Ted Bundy, who was once called by a judge a “bright young man,” in the vein of all the usual misogyny that we’re used to seeing in the judicial system when faced with the fact that yet another (male) murderer who seemed so normal has gone off the rails. I didn’t really know this part, and honestly I couldn’t really tell you much about Ted Bundy so […]

methinks you aren’t as happily married as you think

More: A Memoir of Open Marriage by Molly Roden Winter

December 15, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Again, it has been a while since I read this book but here is my takeaway: the issue here is that the main character, Molly Winter, pursues an open marriage without fully understanding the fundamental reasons for which she wants said open marriage. Each relationship that she embarks upon seems to exacerbate an issue she’s having within her own marriage, as opposed to being additive to it. To back up a bit: there are no end of books, well known ones, about this seemingly newfangled relationship dynamic […]

a review of one of my former favorite books of all time, which I re-read

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

December 9, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Adichie is coming out with a new novel next March, and I’m excited to read it (and attend a reading). Before we do that, let’s revisit one of my original five star reviews, a book that I frequently cite as one of my favorites, and definitely home of one of my favorite quotes which I recite quite often: With him, she was at ease; her skin felt as though it was her right size. But then I recommended it to someone recently, and while they […]

A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: Murder in Ancient Rome by Emma Southon

December 9, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I picked this up because of that viral trope about how all straight men think about ancient Rome constantly. And it tickled me that one of the foremost experts on the Roman Empire is a woman, and this book has a pink cover. Emma Southon delivers a snarky history of Roman murder that’s as engaging as a book on such a niche and distant topic can be. If we’re not learning about Nazis or something else that requires deep gravitas, then I’d much prefer a […]

maybe I just don’t like octopi

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

December 9, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This book was EVERYWHERE for a bit, wasn’t it–“the octopus book”. I tried, I really did, but reading this was like pulling teeth. Everything about it felt so aggressively predictable. It’s like the author learnt some cool facts about octopuses, had an idea for a book with a sassy main character with hidden depths, and dreamt this neat DRAMATIC CONNECTIVE TWIST…but then they got thrown into a blender, and the result was a book that’s painfully over-foreshadowed, like it’s just begging you to race to […]

Cosmere, Colored

Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson

December 9, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Figured today is as good a day as any to review this book, seeing as how I have opened (NOTE: merely opened) The Way of Kings mere minutes ago and have great hopes of finishing it in the four days I have left remaining on my library loan (NOTE: between writing this and finally posting I have finished this book and the next and am ready to start the third). Even re-reading a detailed summary of this book was a TRIP. It’s almost cliche at […]
