Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell by Brandon Sanderson

December 27, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Have given up trying to post these in order, I have. There’s a really cool thing that Sanderson does, which is collate a series of perhaps unrelated ideas into a cohesive. That might be under selling his skill set– perhaps each of these worlds is built from the ground up from entirely new ideas– but the author note seems to suggest that this story in particular grew from a seed of an idea grafted onto another seed, all of which was planted in the soil […]

first book from my first IRL book group!

The Solace of Open Spaces by Gretel Ehrlich

December 15, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Oddly enough this very evocative book about the American West was suggested for and by my very British book club. I say oddly, of course, like American culture hasn’t permeated all corners of the globe, especially the English-speaking globe, but there’s something specific about wide open vistas and the loner cowboy that I always assumed would be of interest only to those of us who have some passing familiarity with the place. After all, you’re talking about giant swaths of land with disproportionate electoral and […]

not gossip-y enough to be worth it

Ten Years to Save the West: Lessons from the Only Conservative in the Room by Liz Truss

December 15, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I mean, what is there to say about this book? It manages to be disappointing even for what it is, because I was really hoping to read lots of gossipy bits about the Tory part but instead it’s like, 15% gossip and 85% City on a Hill-type grandstanding by someone who genuinely believes in the saving power of trickle down economics. It’s not much fun to try and argue with someone like that, and it’s even less fun to read her book. If you must, […]

a rare self-help / guidance book

Connect: Building Exceptional Relationships with Family, Friends, and Colleagues by Carole Robin

December 15, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Yes, fine, this is a book I picked up because living in the Bay and having close friends who went to Stanford for business school means that for at least a few years you can’t go too far without hearing someone talk about Touchy Feely and what it means to them and how revolutionary it all was. And yes, if you hear defensiveness in there you’re not wrong–it does seem like a fascinating class. There’s also something interesting about the concept of going to an MBA, […]

oops did I get two similar-ish books confused

The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra

December 15, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

I think, if I’m being honest, that I did get this book slightly confused with Marra’s other book, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena. Which isn’t to say both books aren’t lovely and worthy of being read, just that they do share common traits. Marra writes what he knows best. I can’t fault an author for doing so, and indeed I really enjoyed both books. Perhaps on further reflection I might have enjoyed this one a tad more? In this work, a central painting–a fictional landscape by […]

not my favorite but ymmv

Funny Story by Emily Henry

December 15, 2024 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Emily Henry’s books basically live in a spectrum of all of her books, in that they are! on the whole! very good! but also she’s set herself up against not only her oeuvre but also the best of the rest, and there’s just some very good slow burn soft smut out there, okay? The plot set up, of course, is peak Romancelandia–my (30sF) partner (30sM) dumped me to get back together with his ex (30sF) who he insisted was “just a friend” and now I’m […]
