Beautiful and interesting and a great gift for hard to buy for people

Around the World in 80 Trees by Jonathan Drori

December 5, 2022 by Wanderlustful 2 Comments

I adored this book. I initially bought it as a father’s day gift because the illustrations were so beautiful (and it looked up my Dad’s alley) but once he was done I stole it to read for myself. It IS beautifully illustrated and also quirky and interesting. I read it slowly over months so that I could absorb more info (4 trees a day), and together with my morning coffee it became this lovely morning ritual. The book is divided into continents and has plucked […]

Can’t decide what kind of book it wants to be

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal

December 5, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

This book was everywhere for awhile, so I’m late to the party but at least I made it! I am a sucker for Indian diaspora books (and books about India in general)- I couldn’t get enough post-colonial lit in college and it left me with an enduring affection for female Indian authors (The God of Small Things still looms large in my foundational reads). Which is to say: I was excited to read this before I had any idea what it was about. The plot […]

I want to love Vonnegut but its just not hitting for me

Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut

December 5, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I never took an American lit class in college, so I am still attempting to fill the holes with some of the seminal authors that I missed, Kurt Vonnegut being one. I read Slaughterhouse Five years ago and mostly what I remember is it being weird- which prepared me for Breakfast of Champions. The novel follows two main characters, Dwayne Hoover, a successful car salesman in Midland City, Ohio, and Kilgore Trout, a fictional author that shows up in several Vonnegut novels. Hoover is inching […]

Non-Rebus Rankin

The Complaints by Ian Rankin

December 5, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I have a real soft spot for Ian Rankin’s John Rebus series- they were the first mystery series I read where it felt like the location was a character (and a real location I could visit). I still remember how keen I was on my first visit to Edinburgh to visit the places that Rankin described. While I still have a few Rebus novels to catch up on (they’re a little bleak, so not a diet for all seasons), I was excited to read a […]

Read ‘A Tree Grows in Brooklyn’ Instead

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce

November 23, 2022 by Wanderlustful 4 Comments

Uggggghhhh. Sometimes I don’t know why I do it to myself, choosing books like this to read (or at least why I don’t quit when I’m not enjoying it). I think its that I always suspect the book is going to get better, especially ‘classic’ books, because otherwise why would someone still be putting it on some ‘100 books to read’ list (including a scratch off poster of important novels that I am very keen to scratch off entries on)?  Two years ago I read […]

I’ll stick to my TV Bourdain

Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain

November 23, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Anthony Bourdain was one of my travel heroes and his suicide several years ago still guts me (while reminding me that people who look like they have everything you could want may still be very unhappy). I have never read any of his work before but I love his voice and attitude, which is to say: my expectations for this book were high. Kitchen Confidential was published in 2000 and was a bestseller. It is Bourdain’s memoir of working in the food industry, divided into […]
