Could use more Emma Stone

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

April 24, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Despite having a degree in literature, I have never taken an American Lit class, so I am on a mission to educate myself.  The Scarlet Letter seemed like a good place to start as a) the stage version was coming to town and I’m a big fan of the ‘read the book first’ approach to adaptations; b) compared to some other ‘classic’ novels, The Scarlet Letter is relatively short; and c) I’m a big fan of Easy A (which I didn’t realize at the time […]

A rollicking well-written adventure

Washington Black by Esi Edugyuan

April 23, 2019 by Wanderlustful 3 Comments

From a flight from slavery in an hot air balloon to surviving blizzards in the Arctic to a maritime science exposition in Victorian London, the eponymous main character in Washington Black literally covers a lot of ground.  Born into slavery on a sugar plantation in Barbados, young Washington, nicknamed Wash, is plucked from the fields by the Master’s brother, Titch, in order to assist Titch in his scientific experiments.  After a white plantation guest commits suicide, Titch foresees that Washington is likely to catch the […]

Big themes in a fun read

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

April 22, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

This is the book that the acclaimed tv series is based on, and although I haven’t watched the show yet (it’s on my to-watch list), the novel makes a quick and entertaining read. Set in a quiet coastal suburb in Australia, the book centers on three mothers whose children are all starting kindergarten together.  Madelaine (Reese Witherspoon’s character in the show) is a feisty and entertaining center to the trio; she takes up battles against other playground moms while dealing with the frustrations of living […]

What would Jesus do?

Good News Bible (New Testament) by God/ Anonymous

April 16, 2019 by Wanderlustful 3 Comments

This is my companion review to my earlier review of the Old Testament, and, as I was reminded by the Cannonball overlords, a timely read given that Easter is coming up this weekend (happy end of Lent to the righteous, happy long weekend to the rest of us heathens!). As a basic overview for those who have been putting off their Bible studies, the New Testament (or at least the Good News Bible version) is roughly 330 pages which are divided into 27 chapters, or […]

The original Book

The Good News Bible by God/ Anonymous

April 2, 2019 by Wanderlustful 3 Comments

It feels very wrong to write a book review of The Bible, but it would also feel wrong to not get the Cannonball Reads credit for reading it- so here we are!  I’m splitting this review into two, one review for the Old Testament and one review for the New Testament- not only does this make sense thematically, but this way I also get double the book reading credit!  Although my hesitations in writing this review are also many, I’m also hopeful that God, if […]

Poetic Detective Fiction

Started Early, Took My Dog by Kate Atkinson

March 18, 2019 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

I hadn’t read any of Kate Atkinson’s novels before picking this one up, and I initially had confused her with Kate Morton (smaller English settings, British authors named Kate?).  I was incorrect but- once I figured out my error- pleasantly surprised by this novel. Started Early, Took My Dog is the 4th and currently latest installment in Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie private detective series, but it stands alone without any loss of comprehension in reading the novels out of order.  In addition to her private detective […]
