The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

March 25, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

The world owes a huge debt Henrietta Lacks: much of our modern health care was developed using cell lines grown from her tissue.  Henrietta was a working class black woman who died from cervical cancer in 1951 and the tissue that was so important was a biopsy of her cervical tissue, taken without good evidence of her having known or consented to that use (although the book does note that the lack of consent was in keeping with the medical ethics of its time). Today, […]

Amen for the Good Book

The Vagina Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter

March 10, 2020 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

Dr. Jen Gunter is a Canadian gynecologist who is on a mission to save the world, and its vaginas, from misinformation and mistreatment.  She has gained a platform through Twitter, NYT posts and a CBC show, Jensplaining, but I knew about her from her vehement refutations of disastrous ‘GOOP-approved’ recommendations (see: jade eggs and vagina steaming). I read The Vagina Bible cover to cover and wasn’t disappointed, although like any reference book some chapters are sure to be more interesting when you have an immediate […]

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach

March 10, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Gulp is Mary Roach’s pop-science journey into the human (and occasionally non-human) digestive track, beginning with all things mouth related (saliva, chewing) and ending up exactly where you’d suspect, although with angles you I didn’t anticipate (Elvis’ megacolon; drug smuggling). I’ve previously read Stiff, Roach’s look at the afterlife of cadavers, and although I enjoyed Gulp, I liked Stiff more.  Because it has been some time since I read Stiff, I can’t remember exactly what is less enticing about Gulp, but I suspect it may […]

Hold me closer Tiny Dancer

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

February 9, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel chronicles the rise of a ‘70s rock band, including all the things you’d expect- drugs, booze, sex, groupies, band in-fighting, etc.  Jenkins Reid starts by tracing the rise of the two band components as their own entities- Daisy Jones, an irresistible pop ingénue with a drug habit and an urge to write her own songs; and The Six, a rust-belt rock band helmed by a charismatic leading man trying to hold his life and his band together amidst his own spiraling […]

True and terrifying

Field Notes from a Catastrophe by Elizabeth Kolbert

February 9, 2020 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

This non-fiction account of the myriad causes, symptoms and impacts of global warming is the scariest thing I have read in years. Kolbert takes us from Alaska to Antarctica to illustrate the changes that humanity has wrought, and gives us glimpses into the staggering government inaction (George W. Bush) to small-scale hopes (Germany’s power grid).  In each chapter, Kolbert develops an increasingly claustrophobic picture of just how screwed we are, and how we need to alter course immediately.  As scary as the information that Kolbert […]

A Portrait of Long-Lasting Wit

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

February 9, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I feel like the premise of this novel has entered our general cultural consciousness, but in case not, consider this a spoiler alert: a portrait is painted of an attractive young man, and the bad things he does are reflected not in his appearance but in the painting, which grows increasingly hideous. Given that I knew this plot going in, the pleasure in reading this novel wasn’t primarily in watching the plot develop (although there were several twists I didn’t see coming) but in Wilde’s […]
