The son and the rain and the appleseed

Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead

October 24, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Jonny’s stepdad has died and he needs to get back to his hometown in time for the funeral. Only problem is that he’s short on cash. Or, as Jonny would frame it, he needs to turn some tricks real quick to get enough cash to hitch back to the rez. Joshua Whitehead is a two spirit Obji-Cree author who, like his main character in the novel, grew up on a reservation in Manitoba before making his way to the big city lights of Winnipeg. Jonny […]

Only mildly witchin’

The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston

October 24, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I like a good witch/supernatural story every now and then, so pulled this one off my shelf (cbr13bingo shelfie!) Brackston’s novel centers on Cai, a Welsh drover, and his new wife Morgana. Being a drover requires a wife, to assure the townspeople that the drover will return with their money after talking the village flocks to the London markets. Accordingly, even though Cai is not yet entirely over the death of his beloved first wife, he proposes to and marries Morgana, a younger woman from […]

Wedding belle

Once Upon a Wedding by Nancy Millar

October 24, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Last year I read a graveyard themed Nancy Millar history book (Remember Me as I Pass By) and this year I turned to something lighter, a book about weddings in western Canada. Like Remember Me, Once Upon a Wedding is armchair-light history, a brief romp back through western Canadian weddings from the 1800s through to the 1940s. Millar’s eye is drawn to newspaper announcements of weddings, old family photos and heirloom wedding dresses, and I once again did a lot of googling to see if […]

The tail wagging the dog

Hoax by Brian Stelter

October 24, 2021 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

Certain of my family members are very into politics (and skepticism), so there is a steady diet of political non-fiction streaming into our house. I usually ignore these in favor of novels or more business-y or memoir-y non-fiction, but I was drawn in by the ‘behind the scenes in the Trump whitehouse’ promise of Stelter’s book. Stelter is a journalist, formerly with the NYT and now with CNN, and has spent over 2 decades covering DC politics. Hoax traces the tightly interwoven rise of right […]

An Affair you won’t remember

The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

October 24, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

The Heir Affair is the second installment in Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan’s (of gofugyourself.com fame) royal fanfic series.  The story picks up the adventures of Prince Nicholas and his new wife Bex (a thinly disguised Will and Kate, if Kate was also somehow a mix of Kate and Meaghan) immediately after their wedding.  I would recommend reading these in order- there are some plot points that connect and you’ll give yourself some spoilers if you read the second novel first- on which point: beware […]

Could have been a 10 minute TED talk

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

June 7, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I am a big Elizabeth Gilbert fan- I loved Eat Pray Love and The Signature of All Things (City of Girls is on my TBR list)- so I looked forward to hearing her thoughts on the creative process. Sadly, this isn’t one of her best works. It feels devoid of substance, more like an influencer post on how to live a more creative life. The ideas in this book could have been a 10 minute TED talk: create for creation’s sake rather than trying to […]
