Oh yeah, more medieval murder mysteries

May 31, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

The Medieval Murderers are a group of writers who, you guessed it, write medieval murder mysteries. There are a series of books, with a rotating cast of authors and characters. Each book is based around a theme, and each author writes about the theme (or object, or whatever) in his or her time period. In this book, all of the stories revolve around what may be the relics of King Arthur – which are sacred, especially to the Welsh. The bones are initially discovered in […]

The Drunken Botanist

April 6, 2015 by Walking Widdershins 2 Comments

I have this book to thank for my newfound love of Strega. My liver may not thank me, but I also now have a very long list of liquors that I want (need?) to try. What’s Strega, you ask? It’s an Italian liqueur, named after the witches of Benevento, a town south of Naples (where my great-grandparents are from). According to the book, there are 70 ingredients in Strega, including cinnamon, iris, juniper, mint, citrus, cloves, anise, and myrrh. It’s herbal based, and can be […]

Medieval Murder Mystery with a plague twist? Sure.

February 22, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

Yet another of my Kindle deals – I love my Kindle cheapies. To a point. This one is a murder mystery, which I like. It takes place in 1666 in London, which I also like. Oh, and plague is breaking out. I don’t really like plague, but the black death has always been pretty interesting. In this one, we’ve got Charlie Tuesday (the day he was put into the foundling hospital – no, seriously, that’s why). He’s a thief-taker, sort of a middle ages private […]

Caution: Do not read this book at bedtime

February 22, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

I pretty much enjoyed Gone Girl, although (like many people), I did not care for the ending. I was on the fence about reading anything else by Gillian Flynn, not so much because of that, in fact I’m not really sure why I was reluctant, although one thing that threw me is that after all the dark twistiness of Gone Girl, she ended the book with an acknowledgements section that read like a high school yearbook dedication. That was the twistiest bit of all for me. […]

The beginning of the Anna Kronberg thriller series

January 21, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

Dr. Anton Kronberg, renowned bacteriologist, receives word that he is needed at what is believed to be a crime scene. A corpse with cholera has been dumped into the waterworks – was it an attempt to infect London? Another clever person has been summoned as well: Sherlock Holmes. Holmes figures something out about Dr. Kronberg that no one else knows. He’s a [spoiler]. Dr. Kronberg’s secret could get the good doctor arrested, and possibly even killed. It turns out the man didn’t die of cholera, but […]

Phryne Fisher #3

January 19, 2015 by Walking Widdershins 2 Comments

Phryne and Dot, her maid, are traveling to Ballarat via train (no spoilers here, folks). But there’s one problem – there’s a bad smell and everyone in first class is passed out. Luckily, our hero(ine) Phryne stays awake long enough to shoot out a window, alert the engineer, and rescue most of her fellow passengers. Well, except one – the mean old lady who spent the whole time complaining and being nasty to her daughter. They were in the first car, where the chloroform was […]
