Maria Maria and other stories – 3/5 I picked up this book because it was nominated for the National Book Award, and it reminds me of how dubious I often am of story collections being nominated for fiction prizes that should probably go to novels. This is a perfectly good collection of stories, with some stories really standing out like the opening story in which a witch is dealing with a troublesome class of new students in a college witching class. Other stories that stand […]

Fairy Tale

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

September 22, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

When a prolific author in his mid-70s publishes a new novel in which a crotchety old man with an aging dog befriends a teenager, you might start wondering how he’s viewing getting older and thinking about legacy. In a lot of ways this book addresses that question with the two character Howard Bowditch and Charlie Reade (and of course the dog Radar).  The novel begins with the narration of Charlie Reade who tells us from a future post about this story from his life, and […]

The Rainmaker

The Rainmaker by John Grisham

September 20, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is one of those other kinds of John Grisham novels. In general, even among his legal thrillers, there’s two types of John Grisham novels. The tightly-plotted thriller like The Pelican Brief or The Runaway Jury is one type. In this type, the pacing is fast, it’s a puzzle being formed in front of you, and it often involves a silly amount of machination and design to bring home a twisty kind of ending. In the other, like A Time to Kill and here, The […]

Tyrant

Tyrant by Stephen Greenblatt

September 20, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I love a good subtweet. This is probably the most elaborate subtweet I’ve ever read too. In the book, Stephen Greenblatt looks at several examples of Shakespeare writing about tyrants, using a wide definition of what exactly makes a tyrant as his model. In general, he’s thinking about rulers who do not represent the will of the people, who work in self-serving ways, whose rise might be illegitimate in various ways, who are ill-equipped, who are morally compromised, who are mentally compromised etc. Hmmmmm. Anyway, […]

Iron John

Iron John by Robert Bly

September 19, 2022 by vel veeter 1 Comment

This book is more or less lost to the ages, but it was a huge deal when it first came out in the mid1980s. It’s based in research and writing from the previous decades that include workshopping with various men’s groups and psychologists. Its title and premise come from a reading of the fairy tale “Iron John” or “Iron Hans” which involves a mysterious area of the forest where people go in search of but never return. Finally, a huntsman goes, finds a pond, has […]

Shorts

The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen

The Great Glorious Goddamn of it All by Josh Ritter

Summerwater by Sarah Moss

September 19, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

The Refugees – 4/5 Stars This short fiction collection from Viet Thanh Nguyen follows up his debut novel The Sympathizer but is not that much like that novel. Both books are good, but like a lot of follow up fiction collections after a successful first novel, these represent a longer writing period as a newish writer is working to become establish. Among other reasons why this collection might be different and why it’s also successful is that Nguyen is a newly published writer, but is in […]
