It’s apparently possible to lose me in your book about death

Blue Nights by Joan Didion

February 10, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

So I was literally changing my tire on the side of the road, sitting in the gutter, crawling underneath in order to hook up the jack, just so I can remember to go get it fixed or replaced after work today, otherwise, when I might forget and have to try to change it at 6am when driving to work this morning. As it were, I had to stop off and fill it otherwise risk the spare popping or being too dangerous. As I was doing […]

Not a vile book, but…..

The Girl with the Polka Dot Dress by Beryl Bainbridge

February 6, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Maybe a British person can explain to me who Beryl Bainbridge is. I mean this in an earnest way because she’s unknown known quantity in my general understanding of British culture in the last 50 years.  She was nominated for the Booker Prize five times and yet, no one seems to like her novels. This one has a shockingly low 2.77 on Goodreads. She’s been labeled as a “Greatest 50 since 1945” but hasn’t written a seminal work. And! All this should add up to […]

The One with the Parrot

Three Tales by Gustave Flaubert

February 6, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I have to admit that even though I went to church when I was a kid and I kind of understand some forms of American (Protestant) Christianity, stories of faith, especially Catholic faith are, not exactly lost on me but, a bit of a struggle for me imaginatively. This collection is sort of like the Simpsons episode with the triptych of Bible stories. The first story involves an understanding of visions of faith and symbols in the material world, the second story is the telling […]

I don’t get it part 2

Tales of Woodsman Pete by Lilli Carre

February 6, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Here’s the Amazon Description: “From one of the bright new faces in the indie comix scene comes a collection of vignettes and stories about a solitary albeit gregarious woodsman with a loose grasp on his own personal history and that of the outside world. He forms relationships with his inanimate surroundings and muses to a dead audience, specifically his bear rug Phillippe. His own tales eventually become entangled with that of the legendary Paul Bunyan, and the two become indirectly intertwined, illuminating the discrepancy between […]

I most definitely don’t get it Part 1

Micrographica and The Ticking by Renee French

February 6, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

So here’s what the first book looks like: And also it looks like this: And sometimes it even looks like this: . Indeed, my friend.   This is a book about hamster like creatures arguing on a ball of crap. Sometimes one of them gets a swelling on his nose and it looks like the swelling on the nose you see above. The best part of this graphic story is the guest artist section in the back, because the artist found several of her friends and colleagues, […]

I am trying to figure out the audience here.

Kindred by Octavia Butler

February 6, 2017 by vel veeter 1 Comment

I need to say straight away that I love the novel Kindred, which I read for a Black Women’s Writers class in college. It was an inspired choice to put on the syllabus that also included Song of Solomon, Brothers and Sisters by Bebe Moore Campbell, Dessa Rose by Sherley Anne Williams among others. I think that that novel is a tremendous combination of sci fi, 1970s Black writing, political fire, angst, and a few other things all tied into one great novel. It shares some really important themes […]
