vel veeter's Reviews:

There was no sign of sympathy or surprise

March 4, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is a strange little collection of stories Of course, I was immediately suspect because it was called “tales” but so be it. I read it anyway. In the first story, a woman is waiting to order two strawberry cakes in memorial of her dead son’s birthday twelve years ago. As she waits, little moments remind her  of various things connected to his life and death. She waits but no one is actually helping any customers. In another story, the road has been covered in […]

This is not a story-teller’s story

March 4, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

In this novella, a young man is more or less obsessed with an older man (in a friendly slash mentorly kind of way). He is pained when the older man’s wife yells at his object of obsession, but he slowly starts to realize he doesn’t know as much about the man as he once thought. But this is comedic story, so it’s not a dark secret. Instead, he finds out that this older man had fought in the Civil War, a fact that shocks him […]

Uncle Daniel

March 4, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Oh Eudora Welty, why can’t I quit you? It’s because I bought her complete novels a few years ago, and well, I feel stuck reading them all. This one was not bad though for a few reasons. It was goofy and had a clear voice to it. The character of Daniel Ponder is a really truly vexing character. He’s terrible with money, obsessed with women, has no moral core, and just seems bent of accidentally destroying his niece’s life. Edna Earle tells early on how […]

Hey I found this great new book no one has ever heard of!

So I liked this book a lot. Just getting that out of the way. Also, I haven’t seen the movie. Just getting THAT out of the way. So what could I possibly add to the conversation about this book and subsequently some sense of the movie? Probably not much. But here’s what I was thinking as I read it. This book is mostly not narrative. I mean this in the sense that there’s a lot of information about the lives of the women and men […]

Again maybe it’s just unfair for me to review books like this

March 4, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Oh, Oh the Moon. I guess I hate whimsy and preciousness. I really must hate them both. Because. Because when I read things like this I have the feelings that someone is messing with me. It’s the same kind of feeling of when someone starts telling you about their self-published book or their one-person show. And you see it all as a test, right. It’s a test to see if you can tell if you are the star of their one-person show and the joke is […]

Of these were the Ralstons

March 4, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

The best part of reading this book was looking up the Amazon reviews to realize that so many people went to this page in order to review the card game. I don’t THINK this novella was the source material for the card games, but meh, who knows. Eight Amazon reviewers could hardly be wrong, right? Instead, the novella is about someone trying to find their way into New York society, not through dishonest means but through sort of sideways means. I am not sure a […]
