vel veeter's Reviews:

You’ll want to know about his mother, she being crucial to the Kid’s beginnings.

The Kid by Ron Hansen

April 21, 2020 by vel veeter 1 Comment

I am not entirely sure what to do with this novel. It’s a novel about Billy the Kid written by a novelist I really like, Ron Hansen, but who probably hasn’t written a very good book since the 1990s. The books of his I really like include westerns, so that isn’t the issue, and the writing is solid, mostly, so that’s not the issue. The novel starts with the background and history of the Antrim family (where Billy the Kid comes from) talks about childhood, […]

The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski

April 21, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I haven’t seen The Witcher tv series, but I have played through The Witcher 3, and I went into it completely cold. I didn’t know the history, the mythos, the world, or the characters. That experience was actually mostly fine except I allowed a character to die who I didn’t realize was a big part of the series, and well they don’t come back. But something I’ve been curious about with the show is how much of it makes any sense to a brand new watcher. […]

The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis

April 20, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is another Walter Tevis one and the second most famous story he wrote behind The Hustler as this is the basis of the Nicholas Roeg movie starring David Bowie from the 1970s. This novel begins in Kentucky in 1980 or so as TJ Newton, our eponymous man, walking into a pawn shop and talking himself in $60 for a gold ring he authenticates, only to later show that he has dozens more just like it. He takes this early win into his next move, creating […]

When I first saw him he was a round thing like a clothes basket covered with sacking.

The Goshawk by TH White

April 20, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

If you’ve read The Sword and the Stone you’ll recall the real sweetness and affection with which TH White writes the character of Archimedes, or Archie, the owl. He’s treated so kindly and preciously, with more pathos than the movie was able to achieve. So it shouldn’t be much of  surprise that TH White himself loved birds, especially hawks (falcons). So in the 1930s when he tries out falconry as a hobby (or more than an hobby) it’s with this same kind of sweetness and compassion. […]

Samantha’s hand were still red from the cold, the skin over her knuckles taut and dry.

Ark by Veronica Roth

Emergency Skin by NK Jemisin

Forward by Blake Crouch

April 20, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Mostly I got this collection because I was interested in some short stories for walks and I like the mix of authors in general. Blake Crouch tells us in the intro/outro to each story the basic purpose of the collection, and like all such genre anthologies, it’s a mixed bag. The audio productions are really good with Evan Rachel Wood, Jason Isaacs, Rosa Salazar, David Harbour, Steven Strait, and Janina Gavankar are the readers of these stories. Each come in around an hour and all […]

Ambassador Sara Bair knew that when the captain of the Polk had invited her to the bridge to view the skip to the Danavar system, protocol strongly suggested that she turn down the invitation.

The Human Division by John Scalzi

Miniatures and other stories by John Scalzi

April 20, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

The Human Division – 3/5 Stars A thirteen episode book told in separate chapters, published separately, and for me, purchased separately in audio installments. I bought them all at once, so I don’t know what, if any, kind of serializing this made out. The book takes place concurrent with the world of Old Man’s War, which is a kind of Starship Troopers riff where citizens who hit a certain age can opt to join up for military service (at 75) and receives a new body, new […]
