TylerDFC's Reviews:

Bloodless is not nearly as interesting as what it sets up.

Bloodless by Preston & Child

November 10, 2021 by TylerDFC 3 Comments

Special Agents Pendergast and Coldmoon are back along with Constance and investigating a series of murders in Savannah, Georgia with corpses drained of every drop of blood. Bloodless begins right where Crooked River ended which I thought was rather unfair. After two high-profile and harrowing back-to-back cases, you would think the FBI could give the two agents a break.  Regardless, Pendergast and Coldmoon are on the case and Constance befriends the eccentric and reclusive owner of the lavish hotel the trio is staying in. Bloodless […]

MEG: Generations by Steve Alten

November 9, 2021 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

MEG: Generations is the 6th book in the epic tale of prehistoric sea creatures and the people who really suck at keeping them in captivity. Yes, a series about giant sharks has more books than Game of Thrones. Let that sink in a minute. At this point in the saga thirty years have passed since the first megalodon (meg for short) escaped from the Mariana Trench to wreak havoc on the Pacific ocean. That first meg was killed, but she had a daughter, the formidable […]

Saving Grace by Debbie Babitt

September 29, 2021 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

I’m not going to bury the lede, I deeply dislike this book. There is not one likable character, nor one that exhibits more than one dimension of personality. The story alternates between frustrating and non-sensical and the finale twists are eye-rolling. This is a bad, Z-grade attempt to emulate Gillian Flynn, Tana French, and Paula Hawkins without understanding what makes those three so good. Mary Grace Dobbs is the newly sworn-in sheriff of her hometown of Redemption, Arkansas in 2019. She got the job after […]

Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back by Various

September 28, 2021 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

When it comes to Star Wars two distinct story universes have to be discussed. The first, the movies, tend to be simplistic and aimed at children and pre-teens. The movies largely follow the Skywalker family and those ancillary to them, and while there are interesting tangents, they follow a pretty safe, unsurprising track. Even the movies that try to do something different such as The Last Jedi are eventually course-corrected back to the path that provides maximum merchandise sales and the least amount of controversy. […]

Insidious horror with a deft touch

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

August 19, 2021 by TylerDFC 5 Comments

I twisted myself around like the twisted ones, and I lay flat on the ground like the dead ones. Melissa, or Mouse as everyone calls her, is a freelance editor living in Pittsburgh. When she gets a call from her elderly father asking her to clean out her recently deceased grandmother’s home in North Carolina she goes because that is what her family does when asked: they help. When Mouse arrives at the house in the woods, with her hound Bongo in tow, she learns […]

Who fears fantasy tropes?

Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor

April 20, 2021 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

Take an ancient prophecy, a genocide-fueled war, a post-apocalyptic setting, a reluctant teacher, band of friends, and a powerful heroine with anger management issues and you have Who Fears Death. This was award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor’s first novel for adults after publishing a few YA novels. This novel feels more like a hybrid of the two formats. The romance and coming-of-age aspects of YA with the more mature themes of an adult novel. Okorafor threw every fantasy trope she could into this brutal novel to […]
