TyburnBlossom's Reviews:

Just Let Annie Have Him

February 4, 2018 by TyburnBlossom 1 Comment

There are some authors whose work you can’t just sample and decide isn’t for you. I’ve struggled to get into King for most of my life and never finished one of his books. I got a Kindle copy of Misery on sale and finally decided that since I paid money for it, I’d better finish it. Besides, maybe I’d love it. I’ve tackled difficult-to-get-into material and loved it, like Dracula and Lovecraft’s complete works. When I got about four pages into Misery and hit the […]

Just Google It Already

January 5, 2018 by TyburnBlossom Leave a Comment

I’m not sure what it says about me that within three chapters of this book, I thought, “This had better end with a divorce.” Really, I don’t know what it says about me that my standard reaction to married couples in books is the same. Or most episodes of House Hunters. In this book, though, the husband spends the first few chapters so busy throwing red flags that I don’t know how he got anything done. I’m struggling hard with what to say about this […]

Take a Whisk to a Gun Fight

January 3, 2018 by TyburnBlossom 1 Comment

I’m so angry at this book. Let me back up and start with all the amazing things this book has going for it. Let’s start with the description that first got my attention: black lesbian steampunk cozy mystery. For real, what’s not to love about that? How about that it’s set in an alternate history where there was no Civil War? Instead of the Civil War, there was a successful slave rebellion that led to the end of slavery in America? How about a late […]

Fifty Shades of Liveblogging Part II (with even more NSFW Language and an updated drinking game)

March 21, 2015 by TyburnBlossom 4 Comments

I already liveblogged reading Fifty Shades of Grey, wherein there was a lot of swearing and a drinking game was born. If you missed it, you can find it here. There’s…um…a lot more swearing this time. And an updated version of the drinking game at the end.

50 Shades of Liveblogging and a Drinking Game (NSFW Language Ahoy)

March 9, 2015 by TyburnBlossom 14 Comments

Rather than attempting to review Fifty Shades of Grey, I present my live read of the book. Herein you’ll find lots of cussing, lots of shouting, and definitely not safe for work descriptions of plenty of things. And it’s very long, because it turns out I had a lot to say while I was reading. A drinking game evolved during the reading, and the whole thing has been compiled at the end, if that’s the sort of thing you’re interested in.

Peer Pressure and Cartoon Villainy

June 8, 2014 by TyburnBlossom Leave a Comment

We get a prologue from a murderer again. And we get a prologue that takes place weeks after the story actually opens. My favorite. Yay. Johanna Wise is one of Shadyside’s poor kids. Her mom has been working two jobs ever since she and Johanna’s dad got divorced–with all of the single parent households in Shadyside, I have to assume the divorce happened while he was awaiting trial on federal charges. She’s envious of Dennis Arthur and his crowd–the wealthiest kids in Shadyside. With enough […]
