It sure took you long enough

She Hulk #6 by Rainbow Rowell

October 2, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Jeez, Rainbow Rowell, it sure took you long enough. After five issues of romantic tension, we finally get some payoff. Walters and Jack have literally already been acting like a couple all this time. It was long overdue. The guy is living with her and forever wearing the heart shirt that she gave him. I know Rowell likes to drag out romance in her stories, but this was bad even by her standards. I mean, if I had to pick one thing that felt like […]

You lost me at the title…

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me by Mariko Tamaki

October 2, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 2 Comments

Honestly, the book lost me with its titular concept. I simply cannot relate to a character who would willingly subject herself to all of this heartbreak with a girl who clearly doesn’t respect her. Laura Dean dumps her, cheats on her, etc. She’s forever an afterthought for Laura Dean and yet she keeps going back to that well. I know sometimes what we want doesn’t make sense, and it’s probably rooted in her not valuing and respecting herself enough, but it still took me out […]

Not as magical for me as it has been for others

The Magic Fish by Trung le Nguyen

October 2, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 2 Comments

Maybe I’m broken, because I didn’t find this as winning as seemingly everybody else. I liked the way they weaved together fairy tales with bits of both the past and the present but, I don’t know, I guess I wanted more. More what, you ask? More time with these characters and less time with the fairy tales. Tien’s coming out tale was what resonated with me the most, so I found myself getting frustrated when it would dip back into a fairy tale. I kept […]

It wasn’t until I read all of these one-shots separately that I realized a two volume collection (pictured above) was due out in the US. That probably would’ve beaten reading fan translations on sketchy free manga sites, which is what I wound up having to resort to. Oh well. Having now read them all, I don’t know that I necessarily would be rushing to buy the collection. That’s not to say there isn’t some quality content here, just that most of it feels like a […]

I might be on a bit of a manga kick… (oh, and double cannonball)

One-Punch Man, Volume 1 by One

Look Back by Tatsuki Fujimoto

Goodbye, Eri by Tatsuki Fujimoto

Assassination Classroom, Volume 1 by Yusei Matsui

September 24, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

It might have something to do with me finding some, ahem, alternative means to reading them. What? I’ve tried the local library, but they’re useless. I wish there was some sort of online rental alternative. Maybe your library has some comics. If you’re super lucky, there’s some manga included in that collection. But good luck finding anything aside from like one copy of the most well-known properties. Apparently, for example, there’s only one copy of One-Punch Man, Volume 1, for example, hence why I had been waiting for  […]

Graeme, just go back to IT consulting…

The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion

The Rosie result by Graeme Simsion

September 23, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Here go the hate reads! I needed to know if Don ever came to the patently obvious realization that he’s autistic, and if Rosie ever cuts herself free from that knot before he finds a way to hang her from it. Mostly, though, I just wanted to see if these books could possibly get worse still and the answer to that question is a resounding yes. And if you’re wondering if spoilers follow, the answer to that question is also yes. SPOILER WARNING! First, there’s The […]
