I make bad life decisions

Marigold and Rose by Louise Glück

She-Hulk #8 by Rainbow Rowell

She-Hulk #9 by Rainbow Rowell

February 3, 2023 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

The other day I went to pick up the puppy-corn bucket we’d painted for our dog Winston at Color Me Mine and decided to stop at the Target up there while I was out, since I needed a couple things. When the Starbucks inside somehow didn’t have a functioning coffee machine, my dumb ass decided to jet on over to the Barnes & Noble across the street to get my Starbucks fix… and for an excuse to probably spend money I shouldn’t on books (I […]

A little light on charm

Like a Charm by Elle McNicoll

January 26, 2023 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

McNicoll is a frustrating author; A Kind of Spark remains my favorite book with an autistic main character, but her follow-ups have felt progressively more ham-fisted. That isn’t to say I didn’t still enjoy them, just that I know she can handle things more deftly than this. In Like a Charm, we have what is, on the surface, a rather personal story for McNicoll, as her main character this time has dyspraxia, something McNicoll herself suffers from. Only it feels like things have started to boil down […]

Another bottle of catch-up.

When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller

Show Us Who You Are by Elle McNicoll

Dotson by Grayson Lee White

The Complete Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne

Boxers by Gene Luen Yang

Little Moments of Love by Catana Chetwynd

As per usual, I’m awful at keeping up with the review part of the Cannonball Read equation, so here’s another review dump! To begin, let’s discuss When You Trap a Tiger, one which caught my eye primarily because of its cover art and the Newberry Medal. Having liked my last pick from Target’s middle-reader end cap (A Kind of Spark) so much, I’d been making a point to check out when new books get added to the rotation there and this one in particular caught my […]

A cuddle bug sorta day

Secrets for the Mad: Obsessions, Confessions, and Life Lessons by Dodie

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse: The Animated Story by Charlie Mackesy

You're My Little Cuddle Bug by Nicola Edwards

January 12, 2023 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

Having adored the original book, my excitement was palpable for the animated version I stumbled across thanks to my free trial of Apple TV. For me, it was one of the best Christmas presents I received. My wife wasn’t really on board, but it happens. So when I saw this new version of the book with art from the film at Target, I snatched it up immediately. The art of the film maintains much of the charm of the original book, all while breathing new […]

Don’t sleep on this series

You're My Little Honey Bunny by Natalie Marshall

January 12, 2023 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

After buying and reading You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie, I was overjoyed to find out that it was part of a series with books for seemingly every time of year. It’s not quite Easter time, but I couldn’t say no to this one when I found it at a Goodwill in good condition. As with the other book, the illustrations from Natalie Marshall are positively adorable, and the rhymes are equally charming. And, while it’s mildly Easter themed, because of the cover character, that’s only the […]

Love & Pajamas cover

Still in love with Catana Comics

In Love & Pajamas by Catana Chetwynd

January 12, 2023 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

I’ve said before that Catana’s online comic is up there with Peanuts for me as one of my all-time favorites, and so it makes sense that, like Peanuts, she would have the occasional lull where things don’t feel as fresh. This was the only book I got for Christmas, a surprise for me after getting quite a few last year, and my wife’s grandmother, the one who got it for me, was more concerned with why it had stickers and what I’d do with them […]
