This feels like a bait and switch

The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang

January 10, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Damnit, Helen Hoang. You lulled me in with the first two books, only to gut punch me with this one. It got pretty real in The Bride Test, as evidenced by my review of that one, but this one was more feels than romance. I guess it makes sense, considering she mentions in the post-script that it was part memoir. I only wish I had read that prior to reading the book. Having dealt with my share of burnout (pick your flavor, autistic or ADHD, or both), […]

Didn’t expect to find myself looking in the mirror…

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

January 7, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith 4 Comments

Now this is more what I was after with the first book. While it remains plenty spicy, the story doesn’t take a backseat to it all this time. And though there are still some moments that had me questioning what the fresh hell I was reading (for example, Khai wakes up with morning wood every day, so he thinks that means jerking it in the shower is a necessity to the point that he gets frustrated it makes his days less efficient), there were fewer […]

A perfect introduction to ADHD for all

How to ADHD: An Insider's Guide to Working with Your Brain by Jessica McCabe

January 5, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Throughout my journey towards an ADHD diagnosis, McCabe’s How to ADHD YouTube channel was something I fell back on quite often. She wasn’t an expert herself, but she did the research and condensed the experts in an easily digestible fashion. Needless to say, when she announced she had a book coming out compiling everything she’d learned, plus contributions from her “Brains” as she calls her fans, as well as bits about her life all rolled into one, I knew I was gonna have to get […]

You should warn a guy first…

Begin Again by Oliver Jeffers

January 5, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

As I do most every trip to Target, I swung through the books, including the children’s books (hope to be a dad someday soon and wanna have books ready to go) and stumbled across this one. The cover caught me just out of the corner of my eye as I was passing by, so I read a couple pages and bought it based on that sampling. What I didn’t realize was that Target had sort of miscategorized the book; Jeffers had intended this not so […]

Suffice it to say, I prefer my smut to not be a surprise

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

January 3, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith 5 Comments

The Kiss Quotient is a book that had come to my attention multiple times in the past, but which I’d passed on each time for one reason or another. Though, after looking up recommendations for books relating to autism specifically, and seeing it pop up time and time again, I moved it to the top of my list and splurged on all three books in the series. Having now finished the first of the three books, I’m wondering if I may have been a bit […]

Paint the town red

Red: A Crayon's Story by Michael Hall

December 9, 2023 by Travis_J_Smith 9 Comments

As soon as I saw the author of Dotson namedrop Red, I knew I had to seek it out. I understood immediately why a trans person would identify with the story of a mislabeled crayon and thought that honestly anybody could benefit from the core idea, which is that labels shouldn’t define you. It doesn’t just apply to the trans community, although that is probably the group that will find it the most relatable. No, anybody can take something away from this. Even if you are comfortable […]
