The Autistic Brain: Thinking across the Spectrum by Temple Grandin and Richard Panek

June 22, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 18 Comments

For the sake of transparency, I guess I should delve briefly into why I went down the autism rabbit hole that led me to reading this book. It all started with occasional “maybe you are autistic” jokes from my fiancee that I brushed off. Over time, particularly after watching multiple seasons of both versions of Love on the Spectrum, among other things, a reassessment began that brought me to the conclusion that there was likely something to those jokes. I saw some of myself in […]

Next time, can I have a little less science fiction?

On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

June 12, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

On a Sunbeam worked best for me when it kept it personal between Grace and Mia. I found myself begrudging the author anytime we’d shift back to the present because I wanted to see more of the two of them growing close. Maybe it was because the science fiction aspects didn’t quite work for me, and the present was ridden with them. Maybe I just didn’t connect to any of the members of the ship the same way I did to Mia and Grace. If […]

Family defines you, so choose wisely

Stone Fruit by Lee Lai

June 12, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

In Stone Fruit, Bron and Ray help parent Ray’s single-mother sister’s daughter Nessie, retreating with her into a fantasy world largely of Bron’s creation. Nessie readily takes to it, and the three of them seem like a happy family. That is, until Ray’s sister calls and you realize the situation. She seems to harbor negative feelings towards Bron, or at least that’s how Ray interprets things, and pleads for more structure her child when she’s with the two of them. From here, the cracks start […]

Let us all shout

Shout by Laurie Halse Anderson

May 14, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Another thrift store find. My copy is missing the dust jacket, and its pages are stained by an unknown substance on the bottom of the book, but I’m not gonna complain too much for $2.99. I recognized the author, yet I cannot recall with certainty whether I read her most well-known work, Speak, or not. I have this nagging suspicion that I have read something by her, but I can’t place for sure what. Regardless, I picked up Shout because of that familiarity and my […]

Two “friends” talk over pizza…

She-Hulk #3 by Rainbow Rowell

May 14, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Can I start this review with a short review of the Marvel subscription service? It might save you money, but it’s kinda trash in every other respect. I thought subscribing mere days after the first issue of She-Hulk came out would net me that issue, but no. Then the second issue didn’t arrive until nearly a month after its release. And due to a variety of factors, from the website being antiquated with next to no information on when anything is going to be (or […]

Everyone Is Tulip by Dave Baker

April 16, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

During our time in Detroit, my fiancee and her parents won some gift cards to local shops, including a favorite of mine, a comic-book store called Vault of Midnight. In the time since then, our gift cards have been refilling themselves on their own. We just go with it and use the money, because who’s gonna turn down free money? I’ve now gotten at least a couple things from Vault of Midnight for free, with the latest being Everyone Is Tulip, purchased for me by […]
