The Curious Incident of the Convoluted Plot

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon

July 17, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

My thoughts on this book are… messy. On one hand, it is refreshing to see a book narrated entirely by a character with ASD. On the other hand, Haddon did not research prior to writing the book, saying “imagination trumps research.” Plus, the novel doesn’t even commit to the diagnosis. There exist many undiagnosed kids and adults, but it felt peculiar in these particular circumstances that Christopher, our narrator, never even has the possibility floated. On one hand, what Christopher puts up on the regular, such as […]

But honestly, I think they are…

All Cats Are On the Autism Spectrum by Kathy Hoopmann

July 16, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

This is the book my one sister says she used to help her daughter understand her brother’s autism, since she loves cats. It’s funny because I’d had more or less the same thought as the title of this book, going so far as to google variations of it, numerous times. The thought occurred to me that it seemed like people on the spectrum, children especially, tended to gravitate towards cats more than dogs, and my brain went from that thought to “well, naturally, because they’re […]

Like a hint of what could’ve been if Lightyear hadn’t flopped so hard…

Izzy Hawthorne: Destiny Awaits by Bethany Baptiste

July 16, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Prior to Lightyear‘s release, I had to restrain myself every time I went to Target from buying one of the middle-grade novelizations of the film because I have zero patience. Now that the film’s finally out in theaters, there’s even more books out there, including this one centered on Izzy Hawthorne. It appeared to be more than a simple retelling of the film’s plot, giving further background to the character we’d only just started to get to know in the movie, and I was game for […]

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness

Three Pianos by Andrew McMahon

July 10, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

The first concert my fiancee took me to was one for somebody I’d never heard of before: Andrew McMahon. She told me he’d survived leukemia, and they had a Dear Jack Foundation table out front where you could sign up to be a bone marrow donor. I wound up having a good time, but I didn’t know how complicated a persona that man at the piano really was until I read the book he released late last year. When I began, I naively thought that […]

Missing some meat on those bones…

She-Hulk #4 by Rainbow Rowell

July 10, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Having reached issue #4, I guess I expected a little more from Rainbow Rowell’s She-Hulk. We have the narrative through line of Jonathan Hart and Jen Walters trying to figure out what brings him back, sure, but everything else has felt like fluff and filler thus far. Maybe I’m being too harsh, since I’m not used to following a comic issue by issue, instead tending to read them volume by volume, but I just keep waiting for something else to latch onto outside of that main […]

A prayer for anyone who has to read this book…

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

July 4, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

Not long ago, my fiancee told me about this book she had to read back in high school that she hated for most of her time reading it, yet wound up liking in the end. Wouldn’t you know she found that exact book at a Goodwill for me shortly after mentioning it? Naturally, she made it her mission to make me read it, telling me I couldn’t read any other books until I finished it. I couldn’t help but break that rule, though, because my word this was […]
