AKA, the times I knew I wish she was my friend…

The Times I Knew I Was Gay by Eleanor Crewes

August 27, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

The Times I Knew I Was Gay is another book that didn’t quite match up with my expectations. Stupidly, I expected we’d get something along the lines of a numbered list of moments that stuck out to Crewes as signs she was gay. What I got instead was a patchwork quilt of anecdotes that flesh out her not only as a gay person, but simply as a person. In many ways, that better serves her story, I feel. Gay people aren’t defined by their sexuality no […]

Act I: The Lake South and the River North by Casey Crescenzo

August 27, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Man, the things you do to support the artists you love the most. Earlier this month, I saw The Dear Hunter live, and the combination of my love for graphic novels, FOMO (it’s no longer available online), and my desire to throw a little extra their way caused me to buy this for $20 and read it in the dark of the venue while I waited for the show to start. Probably not the ideal circumstances, mind you, but I don’t know that it deserved […]

I’m starting to see why Oseman likes Walden so much…

Spinning by Tillie Walden

August 17, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

After reading a bunch of Alice Oseman’s works, I sought out some of her graphic novel recommendations and it led me back to Tillie Walden. I’d read On a Sunbeam, so naturally Spinning went right onto my to-read list when I saw Oseman mention it. Spinning is simultaneously a light and heavy story. Walden gives us a short slice of life, one without too much major upheaval going on, yet it’s more than that for our main character. She has to move to a new town, […]

At least it was short…

Switch by A.S. King

August 17, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

In the latest edition of “Travis doesn’t quite get it,” we have Switch by A.S. King. I kept waiting for some sort of lightbulb moment, but nothing ever flicked that switch (couldn’t resist). Switch tells the story of a Tru Beck, a teenage girl from my home state of Pennsylvania, for whom time has ceased to exist. In her world, it’s randomly gone away, but things are still expected to go on just the same. Meanwhile, at home, she lives in what sounds like the house equivalent of […]

Maybe it’s time I actually review some things…

The Push by Ashley Audrain

August 17, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

For a little while now, I’ve sorta been the voracious reader I once was. Partly due to necessity, as I’d stupidly gone through all those pictures I’d snapped of book covers in places like Target of things for my to-read list and added all (that were available) of them to my library hold list. At any one time, I’ve had roughly a dozen books checked out from the library. Silly me keeps finding new books of interest and adding them to the pile, in addition […]

Chainsaw Man Vol. 1 by Tatsuki Fujimoto

August 10, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Finally, it’s here! As soon as I saw bits of art from the manga, and the trailer for the upcoming anime, I knew I had to add this series to my to-read list. Thankfully, after the long wait, caused by seemingly no place having a readily available copy of the first volume, it doesn’t really disappoint. Is it an especially mature read? Oh, hell no. Our main character is driven by the desire to touch boobs, in essence. There’s much more to it than that, […]
