Kickstarter exclusives are getting to be a little annoying…

Trick r' Treat: 15th Anniversary Collection by Michael Dougherty & Various

August 5, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

With the theater re-release renewing my love for the property, and the sequel film still way off in the horizon, I jumped at the opportunity for any more Trick r’ Treat content and put my hand in for this omnibus collection when I saw the Kickstarter announced. My collection always felt like it was missing a copy of the comics, and this compiles both comics, plus a brand new, exclusive story. How could I not pull the trigger on it? The existing stories still hold […]

It’s like reading a different series entirely

Chainsaw Man Vol. 12 by Tatsuki Fujimoto

Chainsaw Man Vol. 13 by Tatsuki Fujimoto

Chainsaw Man Vol. 14 by Tatsuki Fujimoto

Although I’ve been keeping up to date with Chainsaw Man‘s second arc via the Shonen Jump app, I’ve also been making sure to keep my Chainsaw Man shelf growing with each new physical release. Still, it wasn’t until last night that I decided to sit down and re-read those volumes in that form. I’d been meaning to, knowing from my time with She-Hulk that following any comic/manga issue by issue is an entirely different experience, and for me usually one that drags down the material […]

Early Disney puts the D (as in the grade) in Disney for me

Walt Disney's Classic Storybook by Disney

February 13, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Since these collections don’t appear to list an author, I’ve listed it as “Disney” here for simplicity’s sake. This was a book my wife picked up for me at a thrift store, thinking it was in surprisingly good condition and that it would be of interest to me, given my love for animation. While I appreciate the historical and artistic aspect of it, the stories themselves fall flat for me. Color me controversial, but I never understood the appeal of most of Disney’s early “classics.” […]

They just hit the opposite of the genetic lottery, didn’t they?

Ten Steps to Nanette: A Memoir Situation by Hannah Gadbsy

February 3, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

Per narfna’s recommendation, I ordered a copy of this off of Thriftbooks for $5 and set about reading it. Full disclosure out the gate: I’ve never understood Hannah Gadbsy’s appeal, try as I might. I’m autistic myself, meaning I’ve naturally given them their fair chance, trying first (unsuccessfully) to make it through Nanette, the special this book leads up to, before watching the entirety of Douglas. And I think this book solidifies the opinion I formulated after Douglas, which is that Gadsby is the sort of person I could […]

Charlie Kaufman, maybe stick to adult films

Orion and the Dark by Emma Yarlett

February 3, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

This morning, as I had the day to myself due to the wifey having a girl’s day with her friend, I was initially at a loss for what to do. Then, as I took the dog potty, I was alerted to the fact that the movie I’d seen the trailer for on Netflix, Orion and the Dark, had been written by Charlie Kaufman of all people. This seems like as good a way to spend my Saturday afternoon as any, I thought to myself. The movie, […]

Excuse me, this wasn’t EVERYTHING. I’ll need a sequel posthaste.

Cunk on Everything: The Encyclopedia Philomena by Philomena Cunk

January 29, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith 8 Comments

Man, listening to audiobooks at 3x speed is nice and all, but when Spotify only allots you a set number of hours per month, and you buy extra hours in increments of 10, you chew through those hours at light speed. In the span of just one day, now, I’ve had to refill my audiobook time on Spotify twice since I was making hours of headway in a third the time. Time flies when you’re having fun… and when things are 3 times as fast! […]
