A Queer P&P Retelling

Most Ardently by Gabe Cole Novoa

January 14, 2025 by Tracy 2 Comments

Is that not a gorgeous cover? This was a sweet, queer, YA retelling of Pride and Prejudice, though as a straight, cis woman, it’s easy for me to call it sweet. I imagine it would be much heavier emotionally for members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially those who are trans or nonbinary. Instead of Elizabeth Bennet, we have Oliver Bennet. Only a handful of people know that he is trans, which means most family members, friends, and acquaintances are constantly deadnaming him and referring to […]

Less Well Known Works by Two of My Auto-Buy Authors

The Six Deaths of the Saint by Alix E. Harrow

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir

January 13, 2025 by Tracy 1 Comment

Alix E. Harrow is one of my favorite authors, so as part of my quest to read just about everything she’s written, I dove into her short story The Six Deaths of the Saint. It was unexpected and intense and emotional, though it’s hard to share much without getting into spoiler territory. It also contains a mix of 1st and 2nd person perspective. The story starts with the Saint of War showing up to a poor, nameless orphan and the Saint helps her become a […]

A Somewhat Predictable Novel with a Strong Heart

The Bones Beneath My Skin by T. J. Klune

January 8, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I think Artemis Darth Vader might be one of my favorite characters. She’s one of the 3 main characters in this book, and she’s so much fun. Our trio is rounded out with Nate and Alex. After being fired from his job, and while still dealing with a complex emotional reaction to his parents’ deaths, Nate heads to the cabin in Oregon that his parents left him. He is surprised to find it occupied by Alex and Artemis (Art), who are on the run and […]

Some Carryovers from Last Year and Two from This Year

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

The Cat Who Taught Zen by James Norbury

A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow

A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow

This Fatal Kiss by Alicia Jasinska

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo

January 6, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

Muse of Nightmares I was not expecting that. I was not expecting the call-backs to the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, and that was so cool. This was already a book I was loving, and that bumped it right on up to 5 stars for me. This isn’t a spin-off or sequel, so you don’t have to have read that trilogy to enjoy this one, but I loved the sense of mild continuity. Muse of Nightmares picks up where Strange the Dreamer left off. Minya […]

Beautiful Prose and a Compelling Fantasy World

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

December 24, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This cements it – Laini Taylor is now an auto-buy (well, auto-read) author for me. I loved the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, and now I love Strange the Dreamer. My fondness for the author comes from both the stories she crafts and how beautiful her writing is. Something somewhat gruesome happens on the very first page of Strange the Dreamer, but even that is written poetically. Here are some of the descriptions in which her prose really stood out to me: “The old […]

A Novel About Grief, Writing, and Love.

Writers & Lovers by Lily King

December 19, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This was a buddy read with my husband, which was such a fun experience. Narrated in first person by Casey, it recounts a few months of her time in Massachusetts in the 90s as she copes with the recent death of her mother and a break-up while struggling to make ends meet as an aspiring novelist. During this time she also develops relationships with two very different men—also writers. This is a quiet, internally focused novel. Casey is deeply grieving her mother’s death and often […]
