One of My Quickest and One of My Longest Reads This Year

Several People Are Typing by Calvin Kasulke

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

November 24, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

Several People Are Typing I had such a good time with this one! It’s told exclusively through Slack chat messages, which makes it a really fast read, and it is so funny. There is an ensemble cast, but Gerald is more or less the main character. He inexplicably finds his consciousness uploaded into Slack, and none of his co-workers at a PR firm believe him (understandably!) and assume he is just working from home and doing a comic bit. The main plot of the novel […]

Atmospheric, but Not Much Else

Graveyard Shift by M. L. Rio

November 17, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This was my first M. L. Rio book, and it seemed like it would be so interesting: A group of late shift workers who meet up in a semi-planned way for smoke breaks in a dilapidated cemetery. An unexpected open grave. A mystery that unfolds over the course of a single night. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for me. It’s hard to pin down the genre. It’s a horror book, but without much horror; a thriller, but without much thrill; a mystery, but one that’s […]

I’m So Glad I’m Not an Adolescent Anymore

Flamer by Mike Curato

November 13, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I loved that this graphic novel made me feel. There were so many times I would think “Aw, poor guy” and have a lot of sympathy or empathy for main character Aiden, and other times he made me laugh. The book is funny sometimes, especially if you, like me, can sometimes have a juvenile sense of humor. These varying emotional beats could easily occur within a page or two of each other. While the book is about Aiden Navarro, author Mike Curato drew on his […]

Monsters on Ice

Frostbitten by Dietrich Stogner

November 10, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This is an indie-published fantasy horror novel that I discovered because I follow the author on TikTok, and I liked what I was hearing. While I’m not sure it was quite what I was expecting, I really enjoyed it. When Tomas Greenleaf graduates at the top of his military class, he is promoted to captain and sent on a special assignment to Lahar, a small village in the remote, frozen middle-of-nowhere. However, he doesn’t really know why he’s there, and the villagers don’t want him […]

A Solid Conclusion to the Daevabad Trilogy.

The Empire of Gold by S. A. Chakraborty

November 4, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

(possible spoilers for the previous 2 books) I loved this one. It was a great conclusion to the Daevabad trilogy. We’re sticking with the same three POVs but exploring other parts of the world, namely Cairo and Ta Ntry as Nahri and Ali try to figure out a way to get back to and help Daevabad. Meanwhile Dara and Manizheh are trying to consolidate power in Daevabad. One of the things I really loved about this was the expansion of marid lore. We learn a lot […]

The First Was Good, the Second a Letdown

The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas

Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas

October 31, 2025 by Tracy 2 Comments

The Sunbearer Trials I really liked this. While it didn’t measure up to the joy that Cemetery Boys brought me, it was a strong showing from Aiden Thomas. It’s set in a Mexican-inspired fantasy world, although it is very similar to our own world in terms of technology and even cultural references (e.g., it has Chupa Chups). Main character Teo is surprised to be selected to compete in the Sunbearer Trials. The loser of this trial becomes a sacrifice to protect the world, and the winner […]
