Thriller and social realism rolled into one ball of snow

June 25, 2014 by tillie Leave a Comment

Peter Høeg has a new book out, that has been heavily featured in Danish news papers lately. However I had an old copy of this book on my shelf from my parent’s house. Reading this book was a nostalgic swell of memories from growing up in a 90’s Danish household, from remembering pay phones and imagining all the characters dressed in 90’s fashion. The book became very vivid simply because it was a reminder of a recent past, of seeing the book on my parents’ […]

Safety Addicts

Vita Andersen is one of the greatest Danish, feminist writers. From the 70’s, her poetry is a voice of women who previously didn’t have one; insecure women who need men to validate them in life. As a Danish person it is a must-read and I don’t know if there are English translations, but it should really only be read in its original language. I wouldn’t say these poems are beautiful. The Danish language requires hard work to be structured into something resembling balance and rhythm […]

Shut up and be beautiful

June 5, 2014 by tillie Leave a Comment

This collection of short stories is some of the most intense fiction I have ever read. Dealing solely with children from abusive homes, lost women, vain women and families that are torn apart it is an ugly book to read. Several of the stories paint a realistic picture of the 1970’s Denmark in Copenhagen. Several of the stories deal with children from broken homes, tackling themes such as child molestation and country homes. Others deal with women who cheat, who are cheated on, who can’t […]

I could read this book again and again

3 families in the early 1900’s cross paths. They differ in temper and ideals and life circumstances and thus the book becomes a study in difference in class in the English society, the social and economical differences from the lower to the upper middle class. The Schlegels are cultural and live their lives based on lofty ideals. The Wilcoxes are practical and rich and the Basts are in denial of their poverty and what it will take to get them out of it. I love […]

Arkham’s descent into madness

June 1, 2014 by tillie 1 Comment

I’ve always held the belief that the best batman stories aren’t about batman at all. Arkham Asylum further strengthened my personal hypothesis. On April Fools day Batman gets a call from the Joker, locked in Arkham Asylum. The prisoners have broken out of their cells and are taking the staff and other innocents hostage. Batman can save them, but only if he voluntarily submits himself to the treatment of Arkham Asylum. When he gets there the hostages are let free without any hassle, but the […]

Web forms; filled with philosophy and politics

May 26, 2014 by tillie Leave a Comment

Web forms often stand in the way between what a person wants and how to get it when visiting a website. Many people hate filling out these forms, this may be why people choose to log in through social media accounts despite disadvantages in personal information management; there is just less standing in you way between you and what you’re trying to do.  So what can we, as designers do, when we have to request information from the user? We have to ask ourselves, do […]
