Shitty draft by shitty draft

October 18, 2014 by tillie 1 Comment

I find it difficult to accept advice from writers whose books I have never read. I realize this is my own fault, but it must be mentioned as it plays into my review of the rest of the book. I find Lamott, as a writer, incredibly generic, her patterns of “funny” are easy to see through and her examples of “whimsical” writing annoy me. I am like the students she complain about. The ones who enter bright-eyed on the first day of class put up […]

Hunting down God with a preacher and a vampire

October 12, 2014 by tillie Leave a Comment

Jesse, a fallen preacher and his girlfriend Tulip are traveling to the Grail to save their vampire friend Cassidy. More or less. Preacher draws on western mythology mixing it with religious critique and vulgar comedy. It’s brilliant. We follow the trio, sometimes duo, into various deadly situations and out – and in this sense book two is a straight line from book one. We get introduced to lots of new characters in this book as well; Herr Starr who works for “The Grail” under the […]

Nothing will ever be as good as reading Scott Pilgrim for the first time

September 30, 2014 by tillie 2 Comments

I was inspired to read this book after Renton’s excellent review. I stumbled across a used hard cover and the visuals were simply too stunning for me not to pick it up; deep blues and clear reds twisting and intertwining to create an intricate tree. There were no blurbs or summaries, just this tree on the back and a young woman floating in blue on the front cover. And the artwork does not disappoint. O’Malley still manages to combine the styles of manga with that […]

A must read in the mystery-genre

September 28, 2014 by tillie 1 Comment

I find it difficult to review books as well-crafted as this without it turning into a mere description of the first 10 pages of plot. But here’s the description anyways: 10 people are invited to an isolated island off the coast of England. Great mystery surrounds the only house on the island; it was recently bought by someone, but none of the guests know who….and to top it of they were all invited by different people for different reasons. They are sailed out to the […]

This is how a human being can change

September 23, 2014 by tillie Leave a Comment

The more we are, the richer everything we experience is. And those who want to have deep love in their lives must collect and save for it, and gather honey -Rainer Maria Rilke Please disregard the schmoopy title. This self help book is actually good and it will help you find love. Not because it teaches you a bunch of silly rules or how to change yourself into what men want. No, this book focuses on self improvement for the sake of self improvement. It helps […]

*whisper* I didn’t really care much for this one. *ducks* sorry!

September 20, 2014 by tillie 8 Comments

I just didn’t like this book. It started out so slowly and boring; way to absorbed in small details that failed to be relevant to me. Georgie McCool is a television show writer married to Neal, in a relationship that revolves around their children and not much else. I couldn’t care about her ambitions for writing her show. I couldn’t care about her husband. And thusly I really couldn’t care about the way her career was affecting her relationship with her husband. She kept blaming […]
